On spectral properties of linear combinations of idempotents

Studia Mathematica

Similarity:

Let P,Q be two linear idempotents on a Banach space. We show that the closedness of the range and complementarity of the kernel (range) of linear combinations of P and Q are independent of the choice of coefficients. This generalizes known results and shows that many spectral properties of linear combinations do not depend on their coefficients.

D sets and IP rich sets in ℤ

Randall McCutcheon, Jee Zhou (2016)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

We give combinatorial characterizations of IP rich sets (IP sets that remain IP upon removal of any set of zero upper Banach density) and D sets (members of idempotent ultrafilters, all of whose members have positive upper Banach density) in ℤ. We then show that the family of IP rich sets strictly contains the family of D sets.

Generalized quadratic operators and perturbations

Khalid Souilah (2022)

Mathematica Bohemica

Similarity:

We provide a complete description of the perturbation class and the commuting perturbation class of all generalized quadratic bounded operators with respect to a given idempotent bounded operator in the context of complex Banach spaces. Furthermore, we give simple characterizations of the generalized quadraticity of linear combinations of two generalized quadratic bounded operators with respect to a given idempotent bounded operator.

Maps on idempotent operators

Peter Šemrl (2007)

Banach Center Publications

Similarity:

The set of all bounded linear idempotent operators on a Banach space X is a poset with the partial order defined by P ≤ Q if PQ = QP = P. Another natural relation on the set of idempotent operators is the orthogonality relation defined by P ⊥ Q ⇔ PQ = QP = 0. We briefly survey known theorems on maps on idempotents preserving order or orthogonality. We discuss some related results and open problems. The connections with physics, geometry, theory of automorphisms, and linear preserver...

Maps on idempotents

Peter Šemrl (2005)

Studia Mathematica

Similarity:

Let X be an infinite-dimensional real or complex Banach space, B(X) the algebra of all bounded linear operators on X, and P(X) ⊂ B(X) the subset of all idempotents. We characterize bijective maps on P(X) preserving commutativity in both directions. This unifies and extends the characterizations of two types of automorphisms of P(X), with respect to the orthogonality relation and with respect to the usual partial order; the latter have been previously characterized by Ovchinnikov. We...

On the topological boundary of the one-sided spectrum

Vladimír Müller (1999)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

It is well-known that the topological boundary of the spectrum of an operator is contained in the approximate point spectrum. We show that the one-sided version of this result is not true. This gives also a negative answer to a problem of Schmoeger.
