Structural symmetry within nonlocal integral elasticity: theoretical issues and computational strategies

Aurora Angela Pisano, Paolo Fuschi (2017)

Curved and Layered Structures

Similarity:

The structural symmetry and the appropriate definition of a reduced (symmetric) mechanical/ numerical model is discussed within a nonlocal elasticity context. In particular, reference is made to an integral model of Eringen-type. The paper highlights how the classical, i.e. local, concepts of structural symmetry have to be rephrased through the definition of an enlarged symmetric model of the analyzed structure. This enlarged model, endowed with apposite nonlocal boundary conditions...

A model of evolution of temperature and density of ions in an electrolyte

Andrzej Raczyński (2005)

Applicationes Mathematicae

Similarity:

We study existence and nonexistence of solutions (both stationary and evolution) for a parabolic-elliptic system describing the electrodiffusion of ions. In this model the evolution of temperature is also taken into account. For stationary states the existence of an external potential is also assumed.

Existence results for a fourth order partial differential equation arising in condensed matter physics

Carlos Escudero, Filippo Gazzola, Robert Hakl, Ireneo Peral, Pedro José Torres (2015)

Mathematica Bohemica

Similarity:

We study a higher order parabolic partial differential equation that arises in the context of condensed matter physics. It is a fourth order semilinear equation which nonlinearity is the determinant of the Hessian matrix of the solution. We consider this model in a bounded domain of the real plane and study its stationary solutions both when the geometry of this domain is arbitrary and when it is the unit ball and the solution is radially symmetric. We also consider the initial-boundary...

On the parabolic-elliptic limit of the doubly parabolic Keller-Segel system modelling chemotaxis

Piotr Biler, Lorenzo Brandolese (2009)

Studia Mathematica

Similarity:

We establish new results on convergence, in strong topologies, of solutions of the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel system in the plane to the corresponding solutions of the parabolic-elliptic model, as a physical parameter goes to zero. Our main tools are suitable space-time estimates, implying the global existence of slowly decaying (in general, nonintegrable) solutions for these models, under a natural smallness assumption.

Existence and asymptotics of solutions of the Debye-Nernst-Planck system in ℝ²

Agnieszka Herczak, Michał Olech (2009)

Banach Center Publications

Similarity:

We investigate a system describing electrically charged particles in the whole space ℝ². Our main goal is to describe large time behavior of solutions which start their evolution from initial data of small size. This is achieved using radially symmetric self-similar solutions.

A comparison of coupled and uncoupled solvers for the cardiac Bidomain model

P. Colli Franzone, L. F. Pavarino, S. Scacchi (2013)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

Similarity:

The aim of this work is to compare a new uncoupled solver for the cardiac Bidomain model with a usual coupled solver. The Bidomain model describes the bioelectric activity of the cardiac tissue and consists of a system of a non-linear parabolic reaction-diffusion partial differential equation (PDE) and an elliptic linear PDE. This system models at macroscopic level the evolution of the transmembrane and extracellular electric potentials of the anisotropic cardiac tissue. The evolution...

Vibration analysis of multi-stepped and multi-damaged parabolic arches using GDQ

Erasmo Viola, Marco Miniaci, Nicholas Fantuzzi, Alessandro Marzani (2015)

Curved and Layered Structures

Similarity:

This paper investigates the in-plane free vibrations of multi-stepped and multi-damaged parabolic arches, for various boundary conditions. The axial extension, transverse shear deformation and rotatory inertia effects are taken into account. The constitutive equations relating the stress resultants to the corresponding deformation components refer to an isotropic and linear elastic material. Starting from the kinematic hypothesis for the in-plane displacement of the shear-deformable...

Viscosity solutions to a new phase-field model for martensitic phase transformations

Zhu, Peicheng

Similarity:

We investigate a new phase-field model which describes martensitic phase transitions, driven by material forces, in solid materials, e.g., shape memory alloys. This model is a nonlinear degenerate parabolic equation of second order, its principal part is not in divergence form in multi-dimensional case. We prove the existence of viscosity solutions to an initial-boundary value problem for this model.

Global existence of weak solutions to the Fried-Gurtin model of phase transitions

Zenon Kosowski (2007)

Applicationes Mathematicae

Similarity:

We prove the existence of global in time weak solutions to a three-dimensional system of equations arising in a simple version of the Fried-Gurtin model for the isothermal phase transition in solids. In this model the phase is characterized by an order parameter. The problem considered here has the form of a coupled system of three-dimensional elasticity and parabolic equations. The system is studied with the help of the Faedo-Galerkin method using energy estimates.

PDE models for chemotactic movements: Parabolic, hyperbolic and kinetic

Benoît Perthame (2004)

Applications of Mathematics

Similarity:

Modeling the movement of cells (bacteria, amoeba) is a long standing subject and partial differential equations have been used several times. The most classical and successful system was proposed by Patlak and Keller & Segel and is formed of parabolic or elliptic equations coupled through a drift term. This model exhibits a very deep mathematical structure because smooth solutions exist for small initial norm (in the appropriate space) and blow-up for large norms. This reflects experiments...

Gravitational collapse of a Brownian gas

Clément Sire, Pierre-Henri Chavanis (2004)

Banach Center Publications

Similarity:

We investigate a model describing the dynamics of a gas of self-gravitating Brownian particles. This model can also have applications for the chemotaxis of bacterial populations. We focus here on the collapse phase obtained at sufficiently low temperature/energy and on the post-collapse regime following the singular time where the central density diverges. Several analytical results are illustrated by numerical simulations.

Robert Stańczy (2006)

Banach Center Publications

Similarity:

A priori estimates for solutions of a system describing the interaction of gravitationally attracting particles with a self-similar pressure term are proved. The presented theory covers the case of the model with diffusions that obey either Fermi-Dirac statistics or a polytropic one.

Exponential decay of a solution for some parabolic equation involving a time nonlocal term

Kota Kumazaki (2015)

Mathematica Bohemica

Similarity:

We consider the large time behavior of a solution of a parabolic type equation involving a nonlocal term depending on the unknown function. This equation is proposed as a mathematical model of carbon dioxide transport in concrete carbonation process, and we proved the existence, uniqueness and large time behavior of a solution of this model. In this paper, we derive the exponential decay estimate of the solution of this model under restricted boundary data and initial data.

On the unique solvability of a nonlocal phase separation problem for multicomponent systems

Jens A. Griepentrog (2004)

Banach Center Publications

Similarity:

A nonlocal model of phase separation in multicomponent systems is presented. It is derived from conservation principles and minimization of free energy containing a nonlocal part due to particle interaction. In contrast to the classical Cahn-Hilliard theory with higher order terms this leads to an evolution system of second order parabolic equations for the particle densities, coupled by nonlinear and nonlocal drift terms, and state equations which involve both chemical and interaction...

The problem of data assimilation for soil water movement

François-Xavier Le Dimet, Victor Petrovich Shutyaev, Jiafeng Wang, Mu Mu (2010)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

Similarity:

The soil water movement model governed by the initial-boundary value problem for a quasilinear 1-D parabolic equation with nonlinear coefficients is considered. The generalized statement of the problem is formulated. The solvability of the problem is proved in a certain class of functional spaces. The data assimilation problem for this model is analysed. The numerical results are presented.
