Unilateral contact applications using FEM software

M. Stavroulaki, G. Stavroulakis (2002)

International Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science

Similarity:

Nonsmooth analysis, inequality constrained optimization and variational inequalities are involved in the modelling of unilateral contact problems. The corresponding theoretical and algorithmic tools, which are part of the area known as nonsmooth mechanics, are by no means classical. In general purpose software some of these tools (perhaps in a simplified way) are currently available. Two engineering applications, a rubber-coated roller contact problem and a masonry wall, solved with...

Variational inequalities in plasticity with strain-hardening - equilibrium finite element approach

Zdeněk Kestřánek (1986)

Aplikace matematiky

Similarity:

The incremental finite element method is applied to find the numerical solution of the plasticity problem with strain-hardening. Following Watwood and Hartz, the stress field is approximated by equilibrium triangular elements with linear functions. The field of the strain-hardening parameter is considered to be piecewise linear. The resulting nonlinear optimization problem with constraints is solved by the Lagrange multipliers method with additional variables. A comparison of the results...

On numerical solution of weight minimization of elastic bodies weakly supporting tension

Petr Kočandrle, Petr Rybníček (1995)

Applications of Mathematics

Similarity:

Shape optimization of a two-dimensional elastic body is considered, provided the material is weakly supporting tension. The problem generalizes that of a masonry dam subjected to its weight and to the hydrostatic pressure. A part of the boundary has to be found so as to minimize a given cost functional. The numerical realization using a penalty method and finite element technique is presented. Some typical results are shown.
