Histoire et préhistoire de l'analyse des données
The paper demonstrates briefly the reasoning capabilities in condition monitoring offered by systems based on statement networks. The usefulness of the networks considered results among others from possibilities of their optimization related to the minimization of contradictions between rules acquired from different knowledge sources. A mechanical analogy of such networks introduces an interpretation of statements as material points that are able to move. Dependencies between statements are considered...
Numerical taxonomy, which uses numerical methods to classify and relate items whose properties are non-numerical, is suggested as both an advantageous tool to support case-based reasoning and a means for agents to exploit knowledge that is best expressed in cases. The basic features of numerical taxonomy are explained, and discussed in application to a problem where human agents with differing views obtain solutions by negotiation and by reference to knowledge that is essentially case-like: allocation...
Policy makers and researchers require raw data collected from agencies and companies for their analysis. Nevertheless, any transmission of data to third parties should satisfy some privacy requirements in order to avoid the disclosure of sensitive information. The areas of privacy preserving data mining and statistical disclosure control develop mechanisms for ensuring data privacy. Masking methods are one of such mechanisms. With them, third parties can do computations with a limited risk of disclosure....
This paper highlights advantageous properties of the Bhattacharyya metric over the chi-squared statistic for comparing frequency distributed data. The original interpretation of the Bhattacharyya metric as a geometric similarity measure is reviewed and it is pointed out that this derivation is independent of the use of the Bhattacharyya measure as an upper bound on the probability of misclassification in a two-class problem. The affinity between the Bhattacharyya and Matusita measures is described...
