How to define the Nature of mathematical Texts from late Greek Antiquity: A Proposed Reform of the Idea of Deuteronomic Texts

In this article, I consider Reviel Netz’s notion that mathematical texts in late Greek antiquity should be characterized as ‘deuteronomic’. I first point out the main weaknesses of this proposal. First, it relies on the idea that late antiquity was a decadent period. By contrast, I argue that this idea neither serves as a good point of departure for the study of the period nor ever offers a good description of it. Second, Netz’s proposal relies on the distinction between ‘primary’ and ‘secondary’ texts, which proves to be so weak and general that it loses much of its historical significance. I do, however, show that Netz’s proposal has merit in its effort to highlight a new type of mathematics characteristic of late antiquity. I thus propose to modify Netz’s idea by anchoring it in its specific historical and cultural context, namely, that of the paideia of late antiquity. As a result, I suggest that it is preferable to speak of ‘late paideic’ texts rather than of ‘deuteronomic’ texts.
