Recent results in the approximation of free boundaries
We developed a mimetic finite difference method for solving elliptic equations with tensor coefficients on polyhedral meshes. The first-order convergence estimates in a mesh-dependent norm are derived.
We consider the formulation of contact problems using a Lagrange multiplier to enforce the contact no-penetration constraint. The finite element discretization of the formulation must satisfy stability conditions which include an inf-sup condition. To identify which finite element interpolations in the contact constraint lead to stable (and optimal) numerical solutions we focus on the finite element discretization and solution of a «simple» model problem. While a simple problem to avoid the need...

We consider the Baumann-Oden Discontinuous Galerkin formulation in three dimensions in a rather general geometrical setting. Using only piecewise linear approximations (and no jump stabilizations) the method is clearly unstable. We discuss the relations of possible jump stabilizations and bubble stabilizations.
We consider the approximation of elliptic boundary value problems by conforming finite element methods. A model problem, the Poisson equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions, is used to examine the convergence behavior of flux defined on an internal boundary which splits the domain in two. A variational definition of flux, designed to satisfy local conservation laws, is shown to lead to improved rates of convergence.
