The nonspecific liver esterases of some representatives of vertebrate classes have been analysed by vertical starch gel electrophoresis. The enzyme showed amolecular heterogeneity and a species-specific resolution pattern. Some sex-related differences in the relative activity of some isozymes, moreover, have been observed in the species examined. In Rana esculenta, Lacerta s. sicula and Gallus domesticus, experiments of gonadectomy and/or hormonal therapy with sex hormones showed that the sex-related...
The electrophoretic (starch gel) behaviour of non-specific esterases of the kidney and interrenal of some anurans and urodeles has been investigated. The enzymes show a molecular heterogeneity in the species studied, in the two sexes; those differences are mainly shown in a different activity of some isoenzymes (as in Rana esculenta and Bufo viridis), or sometimes also in the number of isoenzymes (as in urodeles). In some species, however, like Hyla arborea, Bufo vulgaris and Bombina bombina, the...
The electrophoretic (starch gel) behaviour of non-specific esterases of the kidney of Selachii, Scylliorhinus stellaris and Torpedo marmorata has been investigated. In both species the enzyme shows a molecular heterogeneity. Differences in both the number and the activity of the isoenzymes are present in the species and in the two sexes. In Scylliorhinus stellaris, particularly, two isoenzymes migrating toward the cathode can be demostrated only in the male.
