Let k be a field and G a finite group. By analogy with the theory of phantom maps in topology, a map f : M → ℕ between kG-modules is said to be phantom if its restriction to every finitely generated submodule of M factors through a projective module. We investigate the relationships between the theory of phantom maps, the algebraic theory of purity, and Rickard's idempotent modules. In general, adding one to the pure global dimension of kG gives an upper bound for the number of phantoms...

Węglorz' models are models for set theory without the axiom of choice. Each one is determined by an atomic Boolean algebra. Here the algebraic properties of the Boolean algebra are compared to the set theoretic properties of the model.

We study ergodic properties of the class of Gaussian automorphisms whose ergodic self-joinings remain Gaussian. For such automorphisms we describe the structure of their factors and of their centralizer. We show that Gaussian automorphisms with simple spectrum belong to this class. We prove a new sufficient condition for non-disjointness of automorphisms giving rise to a better understanding of Furstenberg's problem relating disjointness to the lack of common factors....
