The Landau-Lifshitz equations and the damping parameter

K. Hamdache, M. Tilioua (2006)

Bollettino dell'Unione Matematica Italiana

Similarity:

The present paper is particularly devoted to the damping effect in ferromagnetic materials. We are interested in determining the sensitivity of the LLG method solution to the phenomenological damping parameter a. We discuss the behaviour of the global weak solutions with finite energy of the Landau-Lifshitz equations when the damping parameter a tends either to 0 (underdamped case) or + (overdamped case).

On the alpine ski with dry friction and air resistance. Some optimization problems for it

Aldo Bressan (1999)

Similarity:

In the present work, divided in three parts, one considers a real skis-skier system, Σ R , descending along a straight-line l with constant dry friction; and one schematizes it by a holonomic system Σ = A U , having any number n 4 of degrees of freedom and subjected to (non-ideal) constraints, partly one-sided. Thus, e.g., jumps and also «steps made with sliding skis» can be schematized by Σ . Among the n Lagrangian coordinates for Σ two are the Cartesian coordinates ξ and η of its center of mass,...

On motions with bursting characters for Lagrangian mechanical systems with a scalar control. I. Existence of a wide class of Lagrangian systems capable of motions with bursting characters

In this Note (which will be followed by a second) we consider a Lagrangian system Σ (possibly without any Lagrangian function) referred to N + 1 coordinates q 1 , q N , u , with u to be used as a control, and precisely to add to Σ a frictionless constraint of the type u = u t . Let Σ 's (frictionless) constraints be represented by the manifold V t generally moving in Hertz's space. We also consider an instant d (to be used for certain limit discontinuity-properties), a point q ¯ , u ¯ of V d , a value p ¯ for Σ 's momentum...

On the ψ₂-behaviour of linear functionals on isotropic convex bodies

G. Paouris (2005)

Studia Mathematica

Similarity:

The slicing problem can be reduced to the study of isotropic convex bodies K with d i a m ( K ) c n L K , where L K is the isotropic constant. We study the ψ₂-behaviour of linear functionals on this class of bodies. It is proved that | | · , θ | | ψ C L K for all θ in a subset U of S n - 1 with measure σ(U) ≥ 1 - exp(-c√n). However, there exist isotropic convex bodies K with uniformly bounded geometric distance from the Euclidean ball, such that m a x θ S n - 1 | | · , θ | | ψ c n L K . In a different direction, we show that good average ψ₂-behaviour of linear functionals...

Local energy decay for several evolution equations on asymptotically euclidean manifolds

Jean-François Bony, Dietrich Häfner (2012)

Annales scientifiques de l'École Normale Supérieure

Similarity:

Let  P be a long range metric perturbation of the Euclidean Laplacian on  d , d 2 . We prove local energy decay for the solutions of the wave, Klein-Gordon and Schrödinger equations associated to  P . The problem is decomposed in a low and high frequency analysis. For the high energy part, we assume a non trapping condition. For low (resp. high) frequencies we obtain a general result about the local energy decay for the group e i t f ( P ) where f has a suitable development at zero (resp. infinity). ...

Gradient theory for plasticity via homogenization of discrete dislocations

Adriana Garroni, Giovanni Leoni, Marcello Ponsiglione (2010)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

Similarity:

We deduce a macroscopic strain gradient theory for plasticity from a model of discrete dislocations. We restrict our analysis to the case of a cylindrical symmetry for the crystal under study, so that the mathematical formulation will involve a two-dimensional variational problem. The dislocations are introduced as point topological defects of the strain fields, for which we compute the elastic energy stored outside the so-called core region. We show that the Γ -limit of this energy (suitably...

Vortex collisions and energy-dissipation rates in the Ginzburg–Landau heat flow. Part I: Study of the perturbed Ginzburg–Landau equation

Sylvia Serfaty (2007)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

Similarity:

We study vortices for solutions of the perturbed Ginzburg–Landau equations Δ u + ( u / ε 2 ) ( 1 | u | 2 ) = f ε where f ε is estimated in L 2 . We prove upper bounds for the Ginzburg–Landau energy in terms of f ε L 2 , and obtain lower bounds for f ε L 2 in terms of the vortices when these form “unbalanced clusters” where i d i 2 ( i d i ) 2 . These results will serve in Part II of this paper to provide estimates on the energy-dissipation rates for solutions of the Ginzburg–Landau heat flow, which allow one to study various phenomena occurring in this flow,...

The number of absorbed individuals in branching brownian motion with a barrier

Pascal Maillard (2013)

Annales de l'I.H.P. Probabilités et statistiques

Similarity:

We study supercritical branching Brownian motion on the real line starting at the origin and with constant drift c . At the point x g t ; 0 , we add an absorbing barrier, i.e. individuals touching the barrier are instantly killed without producing offspring. It is known that there is a critical drift c 0 , such that this process becomes extinct almost surely if and only if c c 0 . In this case, if Z x denotes the number of individuals absorbed at the barrier, we give an asymptotic for P ( Z x = n ) as n goes to infinity....

The generalized Holditch theorem for the homothetic motions on the planar kinematics

Nuri Kuruoğlu, Salim Yüce (2004)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

W. Blaschke and H. R. Müller [4, p. 142] have given the following theorem as a generalization of the classic Holditch Theorem: Let E / E ' be a 1-parameter closed planar Euclidean motion with the rotation number ν and the period T . Under the motion E / E ' , let two points A = ( 0 , 0 ) , B = ( a + b , 0 ) E trace the curves k A , k B E ' and let F A , F B be their orbit areas, respectively. If F X is the orbit area of the orbit curve k of the point X = ( a , 0 ) which is collinear with points A and B then F X = [ a F B + b F A ] a + b - π ν a b . In this paper, under the 1-parameter closed planar homothetic...
