An inequality for symplectic fillings of the link of a hypersurface K3 singularity

Hiroshi Ohta, Kaoru Ono (2009)

Banach Center Publications

Similarity:

Some relations between normal complex surface singularities and symplectic fillings of the links of the singularities are discussed. For a certain class of singularities of general type, which are called hypersurface K3 singularities in this paper, an inequality for numerical invariants of any minimal symplectic fillings of the links of the singularities is derived. This inequality can be regarded as a symplectic/contact analog of the 11/8-conjecture in 4-dimensional topology. ...

On the structure of layers for singularly perturbed equations in the case of unbounded energy

E. Sanchez–Palencia (2010)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

Similarity:

We consider singular perturbation variational problems depending on a small parameter ε. The right hand side is such that the energy does not remain bounded as ε → 0. The asymptotic behavior involves internal layers where most of the energy concentrates. Three examples are addressed, with limits elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic respectively, whereas the problems with ε > 0 are elliptic. In the parabolic and hyperbolic cases, the propagation of singularities appear as an integral...

Geometry and representation of the singular symplectic forms

Wojciech Domitrz, Stanisław Janeczko, Zbigniew Pasternak-Winiarski (2003)

Banach Center Publications

Similarity:

In this paper we show to what extent the closed, singular 2-forms are represented, up to the smooth equivalence, by their restrictions to the corresponding singularity set. In the normalization procedure of the singularity set we find the sufficient conditions for the given closed 2-form to be a pullback of the classical Darboux form. We also find the classification list of simple singularities of the maximal isotropic submanifold-germs in the codimension one Martinet's singular symplectic...

Singularities in contact geometry

Marc Chaperon (2003)

Banach Center Publications

Similarity:

In the first half of the paper, we consider singularities of infinitesimal contact transformations and first order partial differential equations, the main results being related to the classical Sternberg-Chen theorem for hyperbolic germs of vector fields. The second half explains how to construct global generating phase functions for solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations and see what their singularities look like.

Topology and geometry of caustics in relation with experiments

Alain Joets (1999)

Banach Center Publications

Similarity:

Caustics of geometrical optics are understood as special types of Lagrangian singularities. In the compact case, they have remarkable topological properties, expressed in particular by the Chekanov relation. We show how this relation may be experimentally checked on an example of biperiodic caustics produced by the deflection of the light by a nematic liquid crystal layer. Moreover the physical laws may impose a geometrical constraint, when the system is invariant by some group of symmetries....

Dynamics of complex singularities in 1D nonlinear parabolic PDE's

Zoran Grujić (2001)

Studia Mathematica

Similarity:

We establish local-in-time smoothing of a simple model nonlinear parabolic PDE in a scale of weighted Bergman spaces on a strip provided the weights are not too singular. This constitutes a very strong smoothing property since an immediate consequence is that the PDE can "push away" an algebraic-type complex singularity provided that the order of the singularity is small enough.
