Envelope functions and asymptotic structures in Banach spaces

Bünyamin Sarı (2004)

Studia Mathematica

Similarity:

We introduce a notion of disjoint envelope functions to study asymptotic structures of Banach spaces. The main result gives a new characterization of asymptotic- p spaces in terms of the p -behavior of “disjoint-permissible” vectors of constant coefficients. Applying this result to Tirilman spaces we obtain a negative solution to a conjecture of Casazza and Shura. Further investigation of the disjoint envelopes leads to a finite-representability result in the spirit of the Maurey-Pisier...

Note on distortion and Bourgain ℓ₁-index

Anna Maria Pelczar (2009)

Studia Mathematica

Similarity:

Relations between different notions measuring proximity to ℓ₁ and distortability of a Banach space are studied. The main result states that a Banach space all of whose subspaces have Bourgain ℓ₁-index greater than ω α , α < ω₁, contains either an arbitrarily distortable subspace or an α -asymptotic subspace.

Asymptotic behavior of a sequence defined by iteration with applications

Stevo Stević (2002)

Colloquium Mathematicae

Similarity:

We consider the asymptotic behavior of some classes of sequences defined by a recurrent formula. The main result is the following: Let f: (0,∞)² → (0,∞) be a continuous function such that (a) 0 < f(x,y) < px + (1-p)y for some p ∈ (0,1) and for all x,y ∈ (0,α), where α > 0; (b) f ( x , y ) = p x + ( 1 - p ) y - s = m s ( x , y ) uniformly in a neighborhood of the origin, where m > 1, s ( x , y ) = i = 0 s a i , s x s - i y i ; (c) ( 1 , 1 ) = i = 0 m a i , m > 0 . Let x₀,x₁ ∈ (0,α) and x n + 1 = f ( x , x n - 1 ) , n ∈ ℕ. Then the sequence (xₙ) satisfies the following asymptotic formula: x ( ( 2 - p ) / ( ( m - 1 ) i = 0 m a i , m ) ) 1 / ( m - 1 ) 1 / n m - 1 .

Banach Center Publications

Similarity:

A positive operator A and a closed subspace of a Hilbert space ℋ are called compatible if there exists a projector Q onto such that AQ = Q*A. Compatibility is shown to depend on the existence of certain decompositions of ℋ and the ranges of A and A 1 / 2 . It also depends on a certain angle between A() and the orthogonal of .

Asymptotic integration of differential equations with singular p -Laplacian

Milan Medveď, Eva Pekárková (2016)

Archivum Mathematicum

Similarity:

In this paper we deal with the problem of asymptotic integration of nonlinear differential equations with p - Laplacian, where 1 < p < 2 . We prove sufficient conditions under which all solutions of an equation from this class are converging to a linear function as t .

Asymptotic behaviour of averages of k-dimensional marginals of measures on ℝⁿ

Jesús Bastero, Julio Bernués (2009)

Studia Mathematica

Similarity:

We study the asymptotic behaviour, as n → ∞, of the Lebesgue measure of the set x K : | P E ( x ) | t for a random k-dimensional subspace E ⊂ ℝⁿ and an isotropic convex body K ⊂ ℝⁿ. For k growing slowly to infinity, we prove it to be close to the suitably normalised Gaussian measure in k of a t-dilate of the Euclidean unit ball. Some of the results hold for a wider class of probabilities on ℝⁿ.

Asymptotic forms of solutions of perturbed half-linear ordinary differential equations

Sokea Luey, Hiroyuki Usami (2021)

Archivum Mathematicum

Similarity:

Asymptotic forms of solutions of half-linear ordinary differential equation ( | u ' | α - 1 u ' ) ' = α ( 1 + b ( t ) ) | u | α - 1 u are investigated under a smallness condition and some signum conditions on b ( t ) . When α = 1 , our results reduce to well-known ones for linear ordinary differential equations.

Existence and asymptotic behavior of positive solutions for elliptic systems with nonstandard growth conditions

Annales Polonici Mathematici

Similarity:

Our main purpose is to establish the existence of a positive solution of the system ⎧ - p ( x ) u = F ( x , u , v ) , x ∈ Ω, ⎨ - q ( x ) v = H ( x , u , v ) , x ∈ Ω, ⎩u = v = 0, x ∈ ∂Ω, where Ω N is a bounded domain with C² boundary, F ( x , u , v ) = λ p ( x ) [ g ( x ) a ( u ) + f ( v ) ] , H ( x , u , v ) = λ q ( x ) [ g ( x ) b ( v ) + h ( u ) ] , λ > 0 is a parameter, p(x),q(x) are functions which satisfy some conditions, and - p ( x ) u = - d i v ( | u | p ( x ) - 2 u ) is called the p(x)-Laplacian. We give existence results and consider the asymptotic behavior of solutions near the boundary. We do not assume any symmetry conditions on the system.

Existence and asymptotic behaviour of some time-inhomogeneous diffusions

Similarity:

Let us consider a solution of a one-dimensional stochastic differential equation driven by a standard Brownian motion with time-inhomogeneous drift coefficient ρ sgn ( x ) | x | α / t β . This process can be viewed as a Brownian motion evolving in a potential, possibly singular, depending on time. We prove results on the existence and uniqueness of solution, study its asymptotic behaviour and made a precise description, in terms of parameters ρ , α and β , of the recurrence, transience and convergence. More precisely,...

Unitary equivalence and decompositions of finite systems of closed densely defined operators in Hilbert spaces

Piotr Niemiec

Similarity:

An ideal of N-tuples of operators is a class invariant with respect to unitary equivalence which contains direct sums of arbitrary collections of its members as well as their (reduced) parts. New decomposition theorems (with respect to ideals) for N-tuples of closed densely defined linear operators acting in a common (arbitrary) Hilbert space are presented. Algebraic and order (with respect to containment) properties of the class C D D N of all unitary equivalence classes of such N-tuples...

Some orthogonal decompositions of Sobolev spaces and applications

H. Begehr, Yu. Dubinskiĭ (2001)

Colloquium Mathematicae

Similarity:

Two kinds of orthogonal decompositions of the Sobolev space W̊₂¹ and hence also of W - 1 for bounded domains are given. They originate from a decomposition of W̊₂¹ into the orthogonal sum of the subspace of the Δ k -solenoidal functions, k ≥ 1, and its explicitly given orthogonal complement. This decomposition is developed in the real as well as in the complex case. For the solenoidal subspace (k = 0) the decomposition appears in a little different form. In the second kind decomposition the...

Porous medium equation and fast diffusion equation as gradient systems

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

We show that the Porous Medium Equation and the Fast Diffusion Equation, u ˙ - Δ u m = f , with m ( 0 , ) , can be modeled as a gradient system in the Hilbert space H - 1 ( Ω ) , and we obtain existence and uniqueness of solutions in this framework. We deal with bounded and certain unbounded open sets Ω n and do not require any boundary regularity. Moreover, the approach is used to discuss the asymptotic behaviour and order preservation of solutions.

On group decompositions of bounded cosine sequences

Similarity:

A two-sided sequence ( c ) n with values in a complex unital Banach algebra is a cosine sequence if it satisfies c n + m + c n - m = 2 c c for any n,m ∈ ℤ with c₀ equal to the unity of the algebra. A cosine sequence ( c ) n is bounded if s u p n | | c | | < . A (bounded) group decomposition for a cosine sequence c = ( c ) n is a representation of c as c = ( b + b - n ) / 2 for every n ∈ ℤ, where b is an invertible element of the algebra (satisfying s u p n | | b | | < , respectively). It is known that every bounded cosine sequence possesses a universally defined group decomposition, here...

We give a sufficient condition for the existence of a Lyapunov function for the system aₜ = ∇(k(a,c)∇a - h(a,c)∇c), x ∈ Ω, t > 0, ε c = k c Δ c - f ( c ) c + g ( a , c ) , x ∈ Ω, t > 0, for Ω N , completed with either a = c = 0, or ∂a/∂n = ∂c/∂n = 0, or k(a,c) ∂a/∂n = h(a,c) ∂c/∂n, c = 0 on ∂Ω × t > 0. Furthermore we study the asymptotic behaviour of the solution and give some uniform L p -estimates.

Asymptotic nature of higher Mahler measure

We consider Akatsuka’s zeta Mahler measure as a generating function of the higher Mahler measure m k ( P ) of a polynomial P , where m k ( P ) is the integral of l o g k | P | over the complex unit circle. Restricting ourselves to P(x) = x - r with |r| = 1 we show some new asymptotic results regarding m k ( P ) , in particular | m k ( P ) | / k ! 1 / π as k → ∞.
