On fractals which are not so terrible

António M. Caetano (2002)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

The notion of NST domain and the closely related notion of ball condition, both topological in nature and quite useful within the theory of function spaces, are compared with each other (and with the older concept of porosity) and also with other notions of interest, like those of d-set and of interior regular domain, which have a measure-theoretical nature. Also, after extending the idea of NST (not so terrible) to a larger class of sets, the property is studied in the context of anisotropic...

Affine bijections of C(X,I)

Similarity:

Let 𝒳 be a compact Hausdorff space which satisfies the first axiom of countability, I = [0,1] and 𝓒(𝒳,I) the set of all continuous functions from 𝒳 to I. If φ: 𝓒(𝒳,I) → 𝓒(𝒳,I) is a bijective affine map then there exists a homeomorphism μ: 𝒳 → 𝒳 such that for every component C in 𝒳 we have either φ(f)(x) = f(μ(x)), f ∈ 𝓒(𝒳,I), x ∈ C, or φ(f)(x) = 1-f(μ(x)), f ∈ 𝓒(𝒳,I), x ∈ C.

Self-affine fractals of finite type

Banach Center Publications

Similarity:

In the class of self-affine sets on ℝⁿ we study a subclass for which the geometry is rather tractable. A type is a standardized position of two intersecting pieces. For a self-affine tiling, this can be identified with an edge or vertex type. We assume that the number of types is finite. We study the topology of such fractals and their boundary sets, and we show how new finite type fractals can be constructed. For finite type self-affine tiles in the plane we give an algorithm which...

On the Hausdorff dimension of a family of self-similar sets with complicated overlaps

Balázs Bárány (2009)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

We investigate the properties of the Hausdorff dimension of the attractor of the iterated function system (IFS) {γx,λx,λx+1}. Since two maps have the same fixed point, there are very complicated overlaps, and it is not possible to directly apply known techniques. We give a formula for the Hausdorff dimension of the attractor for Lebesgue almost all parameters (γ,λ), γ < λ. This result only holds for almost all parameters: we find a dense set of parameters (γ,λ) for which the Hausdorff...

The dimension of graph directed attractors with overlaps on the line, with an application to a problem in fractal image recognition

Michael Keane, K. Károly, Boris Solomyak (2003)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

Consider a graph directed iterated function system (GIFS) on the line which consists of similarities. Assuming neither any separation conditions, nor any restrictions on the contractions, we compute the almost sure dimension of the attractor. Then we apply our result to give a partial answer to an open problem in the field of fractal image recognition concerning some self-affine graph directed attractors in space.

On univoque points for self-similar sets

Simon Baker, Karma Dajani, Kan Jiang (2015)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

Let K ⊆ ℝ be the unique attractor of an iterated function system. We consider the case where K is an interval and study those elements of K with a unique coding. We prove under mild conditions that the set of points with a unique coding can be identified with a subshift of finite type. As a consequence, we can show that the set of points with a unique coding is a graph-directed self-similar set in the sense of Mauldin and Williams (1988). The theory of Mauldin and Williams then provides...

Multifractal analysis for Birkhoff averages on Lalley-Gatzouras repellers

Henry W. J. Reeve (2011)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

We consider the multifractal analysis for Birkhoff averages of continuous potentials on a class of non-conformal repellers corresponding to the self-affine limit sets studied by Lalley and Gatzouras. A conditional variational principle is given for the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points for which the Birkhoff averages converge to a given value. This extends a result of Barral and Mensi to certain non-conformal maps with a measure dependent Lyapunov exponent.

Continuous dependence on parameters of certain self-affine measures, and their singularity

Daoxin Ding (2011)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

In this paper, we first prove that the self-affine sets depend continuously on the expanding matrix and the digit set, and the corresponding self-affine measures with respect to the probability weight behave in much the same way. Moreover, we obtain some sufficient conditions for certain self-affine measures to be singular.

Separation conditions on controlled Moran constructions

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

It is well known that the open set condition and the positivity of the t-dimensional Hausdorff measure are equivalent on self-similar sets, where t is the zero of the topological pressure. We prove an analogous result for a class of Moran constructions and we study different kinds of Moran constructions in this respect.
