Nonnormality of remainders of some topological groups

Aleksander V. Arhangel'skii, J. van Mill (2016)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

Similarity:

It is known that every remainder of a topological group is Lindelöf or pseudocompact. Motivated by this result, we study in this paper when a topological group G has a normal remainder. In a previous paper we showed that under mild conditions on G , the Continuum Hypothesis implies that if the Čech-Stone remainder G * of G is normal, then it is Lindelöf. Here we continue this line of investigation, mainly for the case of precompact groups. We show that no pseudocompact group, whose weight...

On the Hausdorff Dimension of Topological Subspaces

Tomasz Szarek, Maciej Ślęczka (2006)

Bulletin of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Mathematics

Similarity:

It is shown that every Polish space X with d i m T X d admits a compact subspace Y such that d i m H Y d where d i m T and d i m H denote the topological and Hausdorff dimensions, respectively.

Homeomorphism groups of Sierpiński carpets and Erdős space

Jan J. Dijkstra, Dave Visser (2010)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

Erdős space is the “rational” Hilbert space, that is, the set of vectors in ℓ² with all coordinates rational. Erdős proved that is one-dimensional and homeomorphic to its own square × , which makes it an important example in dimension theory. Dijkstra and van Mill found topological characterizations of . Let M n + 1 , n ∈ ℕ, be the n-dimensional Menger continuum in n + 1 , also known as the n-dimensional Sierpiński carpet, and let D be a countable dense subset of M n + 1 . We consider the topological group...

Characterizations of z -Lindelöf spaces

Ahmad Al-Omari, Takashi Noiri (2017)

Archivum Mathematicum

Similarity:

A topological space ( X , τ ) is said to be z -Lindelöf  [1] if every cover of X by cozero sets of ( X , τ ) admits a countable subcover. In this paper, we obtain new characterizations and preservation theorems of z -Lindelöf spaces.

On n -thin dense sets in powers of topological spaces

Adam Bartoš (2016)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

Similarity:

A subset of a product of topological spaces is called n -thin if every its two distinct points differ in at least n coordinates. We generalize a construction of Gruenhage, Natkaniec, and Piotrowski, and obtain, under CH, a countable T 3 space X without isolated points such that X n contains an n -thin dense subset, but X n + 1 does not contain any n -thin dense subset. We also observe that part of the construction can be carried out under MA.

Remarks on flat and differential K -theory

Man-Ho Ho (2014)

Annales mathématiques Blaise Pascal

Similarity:

In this note we prove some results in flat and differential K -theory. The first one is a proof of the compatibility of the differential topological index and the flat topological index by a direct computation. The second one is the explicit isomorphisms between Bunke-Schick differential K -theory and Freed-Lott differential K -theory.

Algebraic and topological properties of some sets in ℓ₁

Taras Banakh, Artur Bartoszewicz, Szymon Głąb, Emilia Szymonik (2012)

Colloquium Mathematicae

Similarity:

For a sequence x ∈ ℓ₁∖c₀₀, one can consider the set E(x) of all subsums of the series n = 1 x ( n ) . Guthrie and Nymann proved that E(x) is one of the following types of sets: () a finite union of closed intervals; () homeomorphic to the Cantor set; homeomorphic to the set T of subsums of n = 1 b ( n ) where b(2n-1) = 3/4ⁿ and b(2n) = 2/4ⁿ. Denote by ℐ, and the sets of all sequences x ∈ ℓ₁∖c₀₀ such that E(x) has the property (ℐ), () and ( ), respectively. We show that ℐ and are strongly -algebrable and is -lineable....

An irrational problem

Franklin D. Tall (2002)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

Given a topological space ⟨X,⟩ ∈ M, an elementary submodel of set theory, we define X M to be X ∩ M with topology generated by U M : U M . Suppose X M is homeomorphic to the irrationals; must X = X M ? We have partial results. We also answer a question of Gruenhage by showing that if X M is homeomorphic to the “Long Cantor Set”, then X = X M .

On Hattori spaces

A. Bouziad, E. Sukhacheva (2017)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

Similarity:

For a subset A of the real line , Hattori space H ( A ) is a topological space whose underlying point set is the reals and whose topology is defined as follows: points from A are given the usual Euclidean neighborhoods while remaining points are given the neighborhoods of the Sorgenfrey line. In this paper, among other things, we give conditions on A which are sufficient and necessary for H ( A ) to be respectively almost Čech-complete, Čech-complete, quasicomplete, Čech-analytic and weakly separated...

Functionally countable subalgebras and some properties of the Banaschewski compactification

A. R. Olfati (2016)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

Similarity:

Let X be a zero-dimensional space and C c ( X ) be the set of all continuous real valued functions on X with countable image. In this article we denote by C c K ( X ) (resp., C c ψ ( X ) ) the set of all functions in C c ( X ) with compact (resp., pseudocompact) support. First, we observe that C c K ( X ) = O c β 0 X X (resp., C c ψ ( X ) = M c β 0 X υ 0 X ), where β 0 X is the Banaschewski compactification of X and υ 0 X is the -compactification of X . This implies that for an -compact space X , the intersection of all free maximal ideals in C c ( X ) is equal to C c K ( X ) , i.e., M c β 0 X X = C c K ( X ) . By applying...

On non-normality points, Tychonoff products and Suslin number

Sergei Logunov (2022)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

Similarity:

Let a space X be Tychonoff product α < τ X α of τ -many Tychonoff nonsingle point spaces X α . Let Suslin number of X be strictly less than the cofinality of τ . Then we show that every point of remainder is a non-normality point of its Čech–Stone compactification β X . In particular, this is true if X is either R τ or ω τ and a cardinal τ is infinite and not countably cofinal.

Remarks on 𝒮 -Closedness in Topological Spaces

Zbigniew Duszyński (2007)

Bollettino dell'Unione Matematica Italiana

Similarity:

Corresponding to [27], some properties of S-closed subspaces and subsets 𝒮 -closed relative to a topological space are proved. Conditions under which mappings preserve certain 𝒮 -closed subspaces are investigated.

Nevanlinna algebras

A. Haldimann, H. Jarchow (2001)

Studia Mathematica

Similarity:

The Nevanlinna algebras, α p , of this paper are the L p variants of classical weighted area Nevanlinna classes of analytic functions on = z ∈ ℂ: |z| < 1. They are F-algebras, neither locally bounded nor locally convex, with a rich duality structure. For s = (α+2)/p, the algebra F s of analytic functions f: → ℂ such that ( 1 - | z | ) s | f ( z ) | 0 as |z| → 1 is the Fréchet envelope of α p . The corresponding algebra s of analytic f: → ℂ such that s u p z ( 1 - | z | ) s | f ( z ) | < is a complete metric space but fails to be a topological vector space....

Extension of point-finite partitions of unity

Haruto Ohta, Kaori Yamazaki (2006)

A subspace A of a topological space X is said to be P γ -embedded ( P γ (point-finite)-embedded) in X if every (point-finite) partition of unity α on A with |α| ≤ γ extends to a (point-finite) partition of unity on X. The main results are: (Theorem A) A subspace A of X is P γ (point-finite)-embedded in X iff it is P γ -embedded and every countable intersection B of cozero-sets in X with B ∩ A = ∅ can be separated from A by a cozero-set in X. (Theorem B) The product A × [0,1] is P γ (point-finite)-embedded...

Σ s -products revisited

Reynaldo Rojas-Hernández (2015)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

Similarity:

We show that any Σ s -product of at most 𝔠 -many L Σ ( ω ) -spaces has the L Σ ( ω ) -property. This result generalizes some known results about L Σ ( ω ) -spaces. On the other hand, we prove that every Σ s -product of monotonically monolithic spaces is monotonically monolithic, and in a similar form, we show that every Σ s -product of Collins-Roscoe spaces has the Collins-Roscoe property. These results generalize some known results about the Collins-Roscoe spaces and answer some questions due to Tkachuk [Lifting the Collins-Roscoe...
