Non-separable tree-like Banach spaces and Rosenthal's ℓ₁-theorem

Costas Poulios (2014)

Studia Mathematica

Similarity:

We introduce and investigate a class of non-separable tree-like Banach spaces. As a consequence, we prove that we cannot achieve a satisfactory extension of Rosenthal's ℓ₁-theorem to spaces of the type ℓ₁(κ) for κ an uncountable cardinal.

The controlled separable projection property for Banach spaces

Jesús Ferrer, Marek Wójtowicz (2011)

Open Mathematics

Similarity:

Let X, Y be two Banach spaces. We say that Y is a quasi-quotient of X if there is a continuous operator R: X → Y such that its range, R(X), is dense in Y. Let X be a nonseparable Banach space, and let U, W be closed subspaces of X and Y, respectively. We prove that if X has the Controlled Separable Projection Property (CSPP) (this is a weaker notion than the WCG property) and Y is a quasi-quotient of X, then the structure of Y resembles the structure of a separable Banach space: (a)...

Representable Banach Spaces and Uniformly Gateaux-Smooth Norms

Frontisi, Julien (1996)

Serdica Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

It is proved that a representable non-separable Banach space does not admit uniformly Gâteaux-smooth norms. This is true in particular for C(K) spaces where K is a separable non-metrizable Rosenthal compact space.

Separable reduction theorems by the method of elementary submodels

Marek Cúth (2012)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

We simplify the presentation of the method of elementary submodels and we show that it can be used to simplify proofs of existing separable reduction theorems and to obtain new ones. Given a nonseparable Banach space X and either a subset A ⊂ X or a function f defined on X, we are able for certain properties to produce a separable subspace of X which determines whether A or f has the property in question. Such results are proved for properties of sets: of being dense, nowhere dense,...

Some Applications of Simons’ Inequality

Godefroy, Gilles (2000)

Serdica Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

We survey several applications of Simons’ inequality and state related open problems. We show that if a Banach space X has a strongly sub-differentiable norm, then every bounded weakly closed subset of X is an intersection of finite union of balls.

Non-universal families of separable Banach spaces

Ondřej Kurka (2016)

Studia Mathematica

Similarity:

We prove that if 𝓒 is a family of separable Banach spaces which is analytic with respect to the Effros Borel structure and no X ∈ 𝓒 is isometrically universal for all separable Banach spaces, then there exists a separable Banach space with a monotone Schauder basis which is isometrically universal for 𝓒 but not for all separable Banach spaces. We also establish an analogous result for the class of strictly convex spaces.

Fragmentability and compactness in C(K)-spaces

B. Cascales, G. Manjabacas, G. Vera (1998)

Studia Mathematica

Similarity:

Let K be a compact Hausdorff space, C p ( K ) the space of continuous functions on K endowed with the pointwise convergence topology, D ⊂ K a dense subset and t p ( D ) the topology in C(K) of pointwise convergence on D. It is proved that when C p ( K ) is Lindelöf the t p ( D ) -compact subsets of C(K) are fragmented by the supremum norm of C(K). As a consequence we obtain some Namioka type results and apply them to prove that if K is separable and C p ( K ) is Lindelöf, then K is metrizable if, and only if, there is a countable...
