New Computational Tools for Modeling Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia

M. M. Peet, P. S. Kim, S.-I. Niculescu, D. Levy (2009)

Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena

Similarity:

In this paper, we consider a system of nonlinear delay-differential equations (DDEs) which models the dynamics of the interaction between chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), imatinib, and the anti-leukemia immune response. Because of the chaotic nature of the dynamics and the sparse nature of experimental data, we look for ways to use computation to analyze the model without employing direct numerical simulation. In particular, we develop several tools using Lyapunov-Krasovskii analysis...

Models of interactions between heterotrophic and autotrophic organisms

Urszula Foryś, Zuzanna Szymańska (2009)

Applicationes Mathematicae

Similarity:

We present two simple models describing relations between heterotrophic and autotrophic organisms in the land and water environments. The models are based on the Dawidowicz & Zalasiński models but we assume the boundedness of the oxygen resources. We perform a basic mathematical analysis of the models. The results of the analysis are complemented by numerical illustrations.

An unconditionally positive and global stability preserving NSFD scheme for an epidemic model with vaccination

Deqiong Ding, Qiang Ma, Xiaohua Ding (2014)

International Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science

Similarity:

In this paper, a NonStandard Finite Difference (NSFD) scheme is constructed, which can be used to determine numerical solutions for an epidemic model with vaccination. Here the NSFD method is employed to derive a set of difference equations for the epidemic model with vaccination. We show that difference equations have the same dynamics as the original differential system, such as the positivity of the solutions and the stability of the equilibria, without being restricted by the time...

Mathematical analysis of a within-host model of malaria with immune effectors and Holling type II functional response

F. Gazori, M. Hesaaraki (2015)

Applicationes Mathematicae

Similarity:

In this paper, we consider a within-host model of malaria with Holling type II functional response. The model describes the dynamics of the blood-stage of parasites and their interaction with host cells, in particular red blood cells and immune effectors. First, we obtain equilibrium points of the system. The global stability of the disease-free equilibrium point is established when the basic reproduction ratio of infection is R₀< 1. Then the disease is controllable and dies out....

Modeling the role of constant and time varying recycling delay on an ecological food chain

Banibrata Mukhopadhyay, Rakhi Bhattacharyya (2010)

Applications of Mathematics

Similarity:

We consider a mathematical model of nutrient-autotroph-herbivore interaction with nutrient recycling from both autotroph and herbivore. Local and global stability criteria of the model are studied in terms of system parameters. Next we incorporate the time required for recycling of nutrient from herbivore as a constant discrete time delay. The resulting DDE model is analyzed regarding stability and bifurcation aspects. Finally, we assume the recycling delay in the oscillatory form to...

An Epidemic Model With Post-Contact Prophylaxis of Distributed Length II. Stability and Oscillations if Treatment is Fully Effective

H. R. Thieme, A. Tridane, Y. Kuang (2008)

Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena

Similarity:

A possible control strategy against the spread of an infectious disease is the treatment with antimicrobials that are given prophylactically to those that had contact with an infective person. The treatment continues until recovery or until it becomes obvious that there was no infection in the first place. The model considers susceptible, treated uninfected exposed, treated infected, (untreated) infectious, and recovered individuals. The overly optimistic assumptions are made that treated...

Time discrete 2-sex population model

C. O. A. Sowunmi (2003)

Banach Center Publications

Similarity:

A time-discrete 2-sex model with gestation period is analysed. It is significant that the conditions for local stability of a nontrivial steady state do not require that the expected number of female offspring per female equal unity. This is in contrast to results obtained by Curtin and MacCamy [4] and the author [10].

Stability of the Endemic Coexistence Equilibrium for One Host and Two Parasites

T. Dhirasakdanon, H. R. Thieme (2010)

Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena

Similarity:

For an SI type endemic model with one host and two parasite strains, we study the stability of the endemic coexistence equilibrium, where the host and both parasite strains are present. Our model, which is a system of three ordinary differential equations, assumes complete cross-protection between the parasite strains and reduced fertility and increased mortality of infected hosts. It also assumes that one parasite strain is exclusively...
