We find conditions for a smooth nonlinear map f: U → V between open subsets of Hilbert or Banach spaces to be locally convex in the sense that for some c and each positive ɛ < c the image f(B ɛ(x)) of each ɛ-ball B ɛ(x) ⊂ U is convex. We give a lower bound on c via the second order Lipschitz constant Lip2(f), the Lipschitz-open constant Lipo(f) of f, and the 2-convexity number conv2(X) of the Banach space X.

We study the structure of Lipschitz and Hölder-type spaces and their preduals on general metric spaces, and give applications to the uniform structure of Banach spaces. In particular we resolve a problem of Weaver who asks wether if M is a compact metric space and 0 < α < 1, it is always true the space of Hölder continuous functions of class α is isomorphic to l. We show that, on the contrary, if M is a compact convex subset of a Hilbert space this isomorphism holds if...

Lipschitz-free Banach spaces

We show that when a linear quotient map to a separable Banach space X has a Lipschitz right inverse, then it has a linear right inverse. If a separable space X embeds isometrically into a Banach space Y, then Y contains an isometric linear copy of X. This is false for every nonseparable weakly compactly generated Banach space X. Canonical examples of nonseparable Banach spaces which are Lipschitz isomorphic but not linearly isomorphic are constructed. If a Banach space X has the bounded...

We show that a normed space E is a Banach space if and only if there is no bilipschitz map of E onto E ∖ {0}.

Finite codimensional linear isometries on spaces of differentiable and Lipschitz functions

We characterize finite codimensional linear isometries on two spaces, C (n)[0; 1] and Lip [0; 1], where C (n)[0; 1] is the Banach space of n-times continuously differentiable functions on [0; 1] and Lip [0; 1] is the Banach space of Lipschitz continuous functions on [0; 1]. We will see they are exactly surjective isometries. Also, we show that C (n)[0; 1] and Lip [0; 1] admit neither isometric shifts nor backward shifts.
