Surfaces in 3-space that do not lift to embeddings in 4-space

J. Carter, Masahico Saito (1998)

Banach Center Publications

Similarity:

A necessary and sufficient condition for an immersed surface in 3-space to be lifted to an embedding in 4-space is given in terms of colorings of the preimage of the double point set. Giller's example and two new examples of non-liftable generic surfaces in 3-space are presented. One of these examples has branch points. The other is based on a construction similar to the construction of Giller's example in which the orientation double cover of a surface with odd Euler characteristic...

Legendrian graphs and quasipositive diagrams

Sebastian Baader, Masaharu Ishikawa (2009)

Annales de la faculté des sciences de Toulouse Mathématiques

Similarity:

In this paper we clarify the relationship between ribbon surfaces of Legendrian graphs and quasipositive diagrams by using certain fence diagrams. As an application, we give an alternative proof of a theorem concerning a relationship between quasipositive fiber surfaces and contact structures on S 3 . We also answer a question of L. Rudolph concerning moves of quasipositive diagrams.

Quasipositivity and new knot invariants.

Lee Rudolph (1989)

Revista Matemática de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid

Similarity:

This is a survey (including new results) of relations ?some emergent, others established? among three notions which the 1980s saw introduced into knot theory: quasipositivity of a link, the enhanced Milnor number of a fibered link, and the new link polynomials. The Seifert form fails to determine these invariants; perhaps there exists an ?enhanced Seifert form? which does.
