A blind definition of shape

J. L. Lisani, J. M. Morel, L. Rudin (2002)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

In this note, we propose a general definition of shape which is both compatible with the one proposed in phenomenology (gestaltism) and with a computer vision implementation. We reverse the usual order in Computer Vision. We do not define “shape recognition” as a task which requires a “model” pattern which is searched in all images of a certain kind. We give instead a “blind” definition of shapes relying only on invariance and repetition arguments. Given a set of images , we call shape of this...

A blind definition of shape

A grid-computing based multi-camera tracking system for vehicle plate recognition

Zalili Binti Musa, Junzo Watada (2006)

Kybernetika

There are several ways that can be implemented in a vehicle tracking system such as recognizing a vehicle color, a shape or a vehicle plate itself. In this paper, we will concentrate ourselves on recognizing a vehicle on a highway through vehicle plate recognition. Generally, recognizing a vehicle plate for a toll-gate system or parking system is easier than recognizing a car plate for the highway system. There are many cameras installed on the highway to capture images and every camera has different...

A viscosity solution method for Shape-From-Shading without image boundary data

Emmanuel Prados, Fabio Camilli, Olivier Faugeras (2006)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

In this paper we propose a solution of the Lambertian shape-from-shading (SFS) problem by designing a new mathematical framework based on the notion of viscosity solution. The power of our approach is twofolds: (1) it defines a notion of weak solutions (in the viscosity sense) which does not necessarily require boundary data. Moreover, it allows to characterize the viscosity solutions by their “minimums”; and (2) it unifies the works of [Rouy and Tourin, SIAM J. Numer. Anal.29 (1992) 867–884],...

Application of fuzzy techniques to the design of algorithms in computer vision.

Eduard Montseny, Pilar Sobrevilla (1998)

Mathware and Soft Computing

In this paper a method for the design of algorithms is presented which use fuzzy techniques in order to achieve a better vagueness treatment. A base of rules will be developed in order to design the algorithms. Data fuzzification problem is solved by using probability density functions and probability distribution functions, whereas data analysis is set out associating, to each one of the analysis rules, a fuzzy set which will be obtained by applying an aggregation function which will be defined...

Applying fuzzy logic in video surveillance systems.

José Manuel Molina, Jesús García, Oscar Pérez, Javier Carbó, Antonio Berlanga, José Ignacio Portillo (2005)

Mathware and Soft Computing

In this work, the application of fuzzy logic in surveillance systems based on cameras is analyzed. Three different fuzzy systems have been tested and compared with a crisp decision system. The first one has been developed using an expert knowledge, the second one was learned from recorded videos, and a third one is developed as a refinement taking into account evaluation with ground truth. In all cases, the core of the system is the association function, in which the developed fuzzy system takes...

Eye localization for face recognition

Paola Campadelli, Raffaella Lanzarotti, Giuseppe Lipori (2006)

RAIRO - Theoretical Informatics and Applications

We present a novel eye localization method which can be used in face recognition applications. It is based on two SVM classifiers which localize the eyes at different resolution levels exploiting the Haar wavelet representation of the images. We present an extensive analysis of its performance on images of very different public databases, showing very good results.

Fuzzy approach for data association in image tracking.

Julio García, José Manuel Molina, Juan Alberto Besada, Javier I. Portillo (2003)

Mathware and Soft Computing

A fuzzy system has been developed to ponder update decisions both for the trajectories and shapes estimated for targets. It is embedded in an A-SMGCS Surveillance function for airport surface, based on video data processing, in charge of the automatic detection, identification and tracking of all interesting targets (aircraft and relevant ground vehicles). The tracking system captures a sequence of images, preprocesses them to extract the moving regions (blobs), and associates the blobs to tracks...

Fuzzy sets in computer vision: an overview.

Pilar Sobrevilla, Eduard Montseny (2003)

Mathware and Soft Computing

Every computer vision level crawl with uncertainty, what makes its management a significant problem to be considered and solved when trying for automated systems for scene analysis and interpretation. This is why fuzzy set theory and fuzzy logic is making many inroads into the handling of uncertainty in various aspects of image processing and computer vision. The growth within the use of fuzzy set theory in computer vision is keeping pace with the use of more complex algorithms addressed to solve...

Instability of the eikonal equation and shape from shading

Ian Barnes, Kewei Zhang (2010)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

In the shape from shading problem of computer vision one attempts to recover the three-dimensional shape of an object or landscape from the shading on a single image. Under the assumptions that the surface is dusty, distant, and illuminated only from above, the problem reduces to that of solving the eikonal equation |Du|=f on a domain in 2 . Despite various existence and uniqueness theorems for smooth solutions, we show that this problem is unstable, which is catastrophic for general numerical algorithms. ...

Localization and fuzzy classification of manufacturing defects in sheets of glass.

Luis Junco Navascués, Luciano Sánchez (1998)

Mathware and Soft Computing

Artificial Vision Systems are commonly used in industrial applications. The low cost of the equipment facilitates the development of new products. In this paper we describe the use of an artificial vision system in one of the phases of a quality control process related to automotive industries: the windshield manufacturing. We intend to localize and classify the defects that were originated while manufacturing the glass that forms the windshield. We will show that a fuzzy classifier, after being...

Notes on a linguistic description as the basis for automatic image understanding

Ryszard Tadeusiewicz, Marek R. Ogiela, Piotr S. Szczepaniak (2009)

International Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science

The main paradigm of image understanding and a concept for its practical machine realisation are presented. The crucial elements of the presented approach are the formalisation of human knowledge about the class of images that are to be automatically interpreted, a linguistic description and the realization of cognitive resonance.

Numerical algorithms for perspective shape from shading

Michael Breuss, Emiliano Cristiani, Jean-Denis Durou, Maurizio Falcone, Oliver Vogel (2010)

Kybernetika

The Shape-From-Shading (SFS) problem is a fundamental and classic problem in computer vision. It amounts to compute the 3-D depth of objects in a single given 2-D image. This is done by exploiting information about the illumination and the image brightness. We deal with a recent model for Perspective SFS (PSFS) for Lambertian surfaces. It is defined by a Hamilton–Jacobi equation and complemented by state constraints boundary conditions. In this paper we investigate and compare three state-of-the-art...

This article presents the principal results of the doctoral thesis “Recognition of neume notation in historical documents” by Lasko Laskov (Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at Bulgarian Academy of Sciences), successfully defended before the Specialized Academic Council for Informatics and Mathematical Modelling on 07 June 2010.Byzantine neume notation is a specific form of note script, used by the Orthodox Christian Church since ancient times until nowadays for writing music and musical...

Recovering an algebraic curve using its projections from different points. Applications to static and dynamic computational vision

Jeremy Yirmeyahu Kaminski, Michael Fryers, Mina Teicher (2005)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

We study some geometric configurations related to projections of an irreducible algebraic curve embedded in 3 onto embedded projective planes. These configurations are motivated by applications to static and dynamic computational vision. More precisely, we study how an irreducible closed algebraic curve X embedded in 3 , of degree d and genus g , can be recovered using its projections from points onto embedded projective planes. The embeddings are unknown. The only input is the defining equation of...
