Free loop spaces and cyclohedra

Markl, Martin (2003)

Proceedings of the 22nd Winter School "Geometry and Physics"

It is well-known that a based space is of the weak homotopy type of a loop space iff it is a grouplike algebra over an A -operad. The classical model for such an operad consists of Stasheff’s associahedra. The present paper describes a similar recognition principle for free loop spaces. Let 𝒫 be an operad, M a 𝒫 -module and U a 𝒫 -algebra. An M -trace over U consists of a space V and a module homomorphism T : M End U , V over the operad homomorphism 𝒫 End U given by the algebra structure on U . Let 𝒞 1 be the little 1-cubes...

From binary cube triangulations to acute binary simplices

Brandts, Jan, van den Hooff, Jelle, Kuiper, Carlo, Steenkamp, Rik (2012)

Applications of Mathematics 2012

Cottle’s proof that the minimal number of 0 / 1 -simplices needed to triangulate the unit 4 -cube equals 16 uses a modest amount of computer generated results. In this paper we remove the need for computer aid, using some lemmas that may be useful also in a broader context. One of the 0 / 1 -simplices involved, the so-called antipodal simplex, has acute dihedral angles. We continue with the study of such acute binary simplices and point out their possible relation to the Hadamard determinant problem.

From convergence of operator semigroups to gene expression, and back again

Adam Bobrowski (2008)

Banach Center Publications

The subject of the paper is reciprocal influence of pure mathematics and applied sciences. We illustrate the idea by giving a review of mathematical results obtained recently, related to the model of stochastic gene expression due to Lipniacki et al. [38]. In this model, featuring mRNA and protein levels, and gene activity, the stochastic part of processes involved in gene expression is distinguished from the part that seems to be mostly deterministic, and the dynamics is expressed by means of a...

From Pixels and Minds to the Mathematical Knowledge in a Digital Library

Sojka, Petr, Rákosník, Jiří (2008)

Towards Digital Mathematics Library. Birmingham, United Kingdom, July 27th, 2008

Experience in setting up a workflow from scanned images of mathematical papers into a fully fledged mathematical library is described on the example of the project Czech Digital Mathematics Library DML-CZ. An overview of the whole process is given, with description of all main production steps. DML-CZ has recently been launched to public with more than 100,000 digitized pages.

From the Fermi-Walker to the Cartan connection

Lafuente, Javier, Salvador, Beatriz (2000)

Proceedings of the 19th Winter School "Geometry and Physics"

Let M be a C -manifold with a Riemannian conformal structure C . Given a regular curve γ on M , the authors define a linear operator on the space of (differentiable) vector fields along γ , only depending on C , called the Fermi-Walker connection along γ . Then, the authors introduce the concept of Fermi-Walker parallel vector field along γ , proving that such vector fields set up a linear space isomorphic to the tangent space at a point of γ . This allows to consider the Fermi-Walker horizontal lift of...
