A note on a construction of J. F. Feinstein

M. J. Heath — 2005

Studia Mathematica

In [6] J. F. Feinstein constructed a compact plane set X such that R(X), the uniform closure of the algebra of rational functions with poles off X, has no non-zero, bounded point derivations but is not weakly amenable. In the same paper he gave an example of a separable uniform algebra A such that every point in the character space of A is a peak point but A is not weakly amenable. We show that it is possible to modify the construction in order to produce examples which are also regular.

Compactness of derivations from commutative Banach algebras

Matthew J. Heath — 2010

Banach Center Publications

We consider the compactness of derivations from commutative Banach algebras into their dual modules. We show that if there are no compact derivations from a commutative Banach algebra, A, into its dual module, then there are no compact derivations from A into any symmetric A-bimodule; we also prove analogous results for weakly compact derivations and for bounded derivations of finite rank. We then characterise the compact derivations from the convolution algebra ℓ¹(ℤ₊) to its dual. Finally, we give...

Exactly two-to-one maps from continua onto arc-continua

Wojciech DębskiJ. HeathJ. Mioduszewski — 1996

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Continuing studies on 2-to-1 maps onto indecomposable continua having only arcs as proper non-degenerate subcontinua - called here arc-continua - we drop the hypothesis of tree-likeness, and we get some conditions on the arc-continuum image that force any 2-to-1 map to be a local homeomorphism. We show that any 2-to-1 map from a continuum onto a local Cantor bundle Y is either a local homeomorphism or a retraction if Y is orientable, and that it is a local homeomorphism if Y is not orientable.

Exactly two-to-one maps from continua onto some tree-like continua

Wojciech DębskiJ. HeathJ. Mioduszewski — 1992

Fundamenta Mathematicae

It is known that no dendrite (Gottschalk 1947) and no hereditarily indecomposable tree-like continuum (J. Heath 1991) can be the image of a continuum under an exactly 2-to-1 (continuous) map. This paper enlarges the class of tree-like continua satisfying this property, namely to include those tree-like continua whose nondegenerate proper subcontinua are arcs. This includes all Knaster continua and Ingram continua. The conjecture that all tree-like continua have this property, stated by S. Nadler...

Swiss cheeses, rational approximation and universal plane curves

J. F. FeinsteinM. J. Heath — 2010

Studia Mathematica

We consider the compact plane sets known as Swiss cheese sets, which are a useful source of examples in the theory of uniform algebras and rational approximation. We develop a theory of allocation maps connected to such sets and we use this theory to modify examples previously constructed in the literature to obtain examples homeomorphic to the Sierpiński carpet. Our techniques also allow us to avoid certain technical difficulties in the literature.
