Properties of derivations on some convolution algebras

Thomas Pedersen — 2014

Open Mathematics

For all convolution algebras L 1[0, 1); L loc1 and A(ω) = ∩n L 1(ωn), the derivations are of the form D μ f = Xf * μ for suitable measures μ, where (Xf)(t) = tf(t). We describe the (weakly) compact as well as the (weakly) Montel derivations on these algebras in terms of properties of the measure μ. Moreover, for all these algebras we show that the extension of D μ to a natural dual space is weak-star continuous.

Some results about Beurling algebras with applications to operator theory

Thomas Vils Pedersen — 1995

Studia Mathematica

We prove that certain maximal ideals in Beurling algebras on the unit disc have approximate identities, and show the existence of functions with certain properties in these maximal ideals. We then use these results to prove that if T is a bounded operator on a Banach space X satisfying T n = O ( n β ) as n → ∞ for some β ≥ 0, then n = 1 ( 1 - T ) n x / ( 1 - T ) n - 1 x diverges for every x ∈ X such that ( 1 - T ) [ β ] + 1 x 0 .

Ideals in big Lipschitz algebras of analytic functions

Thomas Vils Pedersen — 2004

Studia Mathematica

For 0 < γ ≤ 1, let Λ γ be the big Lipschitz algebra of functions analytic on the open unit disc which satisfy a Lipschitz condition of order γ on ̅. For a closed set E on the unit circle and an inner function Q, let J γ ( E , Q ) be the closed ideal in Λ γ consisting of those functions f Λ γ for which (i) f = 0 on E, (ii) | f ( z ) - f ( w ) | = o ( | z - w | γ ) as d(z,E),d(w,E) → 0, (iii) f / Q Λ γ . Also, for a closed ideal I in Λ γ , let E I = z ∈ : f(z) = 0 for every f ∈ I and let Q I be the greatest common divisor of the inner parts of non-zero functions in I....

Idempotents in quotients and restrictions of Banach algebras of functions

Thomas Vils Pedersen — 1996

Annales de l'institut Fourier

Let 𝒜 β be the Beurling algebra with weight ( 1 + | n | ) β on the unit circle 𝕋 and, for a closed set E 𝕋 , let J 𝒜 β ( E ) = { f 𝒜 β : f = 0 on a neighbourhood of E } . We prove that, for β > 1 2 , there exists a closed set E 𝕋 of measure zero such that the quotient algebra 𝒜 β / J 𝒜 β ( E ) is not generated by its idempotents, thus contrasting a result of Zouakia. Furthermore, for the Lipschitz algebras λ γ and the algebra 𝒜 𝒞 of absolutely continuous functions on 𝕋 , we characterize the closed sets E 𝕋 for which the restriction algebras λ γ ( E ) and 𝒜 𝒞 ( E ) are generated by their idempotents.

Homogenous Banach spaces on the unit circle.

Thomas Vils Pedersen — 2000

Publicacions Matemàtiques

We prove that a homogeneous Banach space B on the unit circle T can be embedded as a closed subspace of a dual space Ξ*B contained in the space of bounded Borel measures on T in such a way that the map B → Ξ*B defines a bijective correspondence between the class of homogeneous Banach spaces on T and the class of prehomogeneous Banach spaces on T. We apply our results to show that the algebra of all continuous functions on T is the only homogeneous...

A class of weighted convolution Fréchet algebras

Thomas Vils Pedersen — 2010

Banach Center Publications

For an increasing sequence (ωₙ) of algebra weights on ℝ⁺ we study various properties of the Fréchet algebra A(ω) = ⋂ ₙ L¹(ωₙ) obtained as the intersection of the weighted Banach algebras L¹(ωₙ). We show that every endomorphism of A(ω) is standard, if for all n ∈ ℕ there exists m ∈ ℕ such that ω m ( t ) / ω ( t ) as t → ∞. Moreover, we characterise the continuous derivations on this algebra: Let M(ωₙ) be the corresponding weighted measure algebras and let B(ω) = ⋂ ₙM(ωₙ). If for all n ∈ ℕ there exists m ∈ ℕ such that...
