Indiscernibles and dimensional compactness

C. Ward Henson, Pavol Zlatoš (1996)

This is a contribution to the theory of topological vector spaces within the framework of the alternative set theory. Using indiscernibles we will show that every infinite set u S G in a biequivalence vector space W , M , G , such that x - y M for distinct x , y u , contains an infinite independent subset. Consequently, a class X G is dimensionally compact iff the π -equivalence M is compact on X . This solves a problem from the paper [NPZ 1992] by J. Náter, P. Pulmann and the second author.

Continuum spectrum for the linearized extremal eigenvalue problem with boundary reactions

We study the semilinear problem with the boundary reaction - Δ u + u = 0 in Ω , u ν = λ f ( u ) on Ω , where Ω N , N 2 , is a smooth bounded domain, f : [ 0 , ) ( 0 , ) is a smooth, strictly positive, convex, increasing function which is superlinear at , and λ > 0 is a parameter. It is known that there exists an extremal parameter λ * > 0 such that a classical minimal solution exists for λ < λ * , and there is no solution for λ > λ * . Moreover, there is a unique weak solution u * corresponding to the parameter λ = λ * . In this paper, we continue to study the spectral properties...

Ultrafilter-limit points in metric dynamical systems

Given a free ultrafilter p on and a space X , we say that x X is the p -limit point of a sequence ( x n ) n in X (in symbols, x = p - lim n x n ) if for every neighborhood V of x , { n : x n V } p . By using p -limit points from a suitable metric space, we characterize the selective ultrafilters on and the P -points of * = β ( ) . In this paper, we only consider dynamical systems ( X , f ) , where X is a compact metric space. For a free ultrafilter p on * , the function f p : X X is defined by f p ( x ) = p - lim n f n ( x ) for each x X . These functions are not continuous in general....

On the minimizing point of the incorrectly centered empirical process and its limit distribution in nonregular experiments

Let F n be the empirical distribution function (df) pertaining to independent random variables with continuous df F . We investigate the minimizing point τ ^ n of the empirical process F n - F 0 , where F 0 is another df which differs from F . If F and F 0 are locally Hölder-continuous of order α at a point τ our main result states that n 1 / α ( τ ^ n - τ ) converges in distribution. The limit variable is the almost sure unique minimizing point of a two-sided time-transformed homogeneous Poisson-process with a drift. The time-transformation...
