A note on a class of factorized p -groups

Enrico Jabara (2005)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

In this note we study finite p -groups G = A B admitting a factorization by an Abelian subgroup A and a subgroup B . As a consequence of our results we prove that if B contains an Abelian subgroup of index p n - 1 then G has derived length at most 2 n .

The dual group of a dense subgroup

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

Throughout this abstract, G is a topological Abelian group and G ^ is the space of continuous homomorphisms from G into the circle group 𝕋 in the compact-open topology. A dense subgroup D of G is said to determine G if the (necessarily continuous) surjective isomorphism G ^ D ^ given by h h | D is a homeomorphism, and G is determined if each dense subgroup of G determines G . The principal result in this area, obtained independently by L. Außenhofer and M. J. Chasco, is the following: Every metrizable...

An elementary class extending abelian-by- G groups, for G infinite

Carlo Toffalori (1996)

Atti della Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Classe di Scienze Fisiche, Matematiche e Naturali. Rendiconti Lincei. Matematica e Applicazioni

Similarity:

We show that for no infinite group G the class of abelian-by- G groups is elementary, but, at least when G is an infinite elementary abelian p -group (with p prime), the class of groups admitting a normal abelian subgroup whose quotient group is elementarily equivalent to G is elementary.

Extremal phenomena in certain classes of totally bounded groups

W. W. Comfort, Lewis C. Robertson

Similarity:

For various pairs of topological properties such that P ⇒ Q, we consider two questions: (A) Does every topological group topology with P extend properly to a topological group topology with Q, and (B) must a topological group with P have a proper dense subgroup with Q? We obtain negative results and positive results. Principal among the latter is the statement that any pseudocompact group G of uncountable weight which satisfies any of the following three conditions has both a strictly...

Covering locally compact groups by less than 2 ω many translates of a compact nullset

Márton Elekes, Árpád Tóth (2007)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

Gruenhage asked if it was possible to cover the real line by less than continuum many translates of a compact nullset. Under the Continuum Hypothesis the answer is obviously negative. Elekes and Stepr mans gave an affirmative answer by showing that if C E K is the well known compact nullset considered first by Erdős and Kakutani then ℝ can be covered by cof() many translates of C E K . As this set has no analogue in more general groups, it was asked by Elekes and Stepr mans whether such a result...

Subsequence sums of zero-sum free sequences over finite abelian groups

Similarity:

Let G be a finite abelian group of rank r and let X be a zero-sum free sequence over G whose support supp(X) generates G. In 2009, Pixton proved that | Σ ( X ) | 2 r - 1 ( | X | - r + 2 ) - 1 for r ≤ 3. We show that this result also holds for abelian groups G of rank 4 if the smallest prime p dividing |G| satisfies p ≥ 13.
