We verify functional a posteriori error estimates proposed by S. Repin for a class of obstacle problems in two space dimensions. New benchmarks with known analytical solution are constructed based on one dimensional benchmark introduced by P. Harasim and J. Valdman. Numerical approximation of the solution of the obstacle problem is obtained by the finite element method using bilinear elements on a rectangular mesh. Error of the approximation is measured by a functional majorant. The...

We propose an adaptive finite element method for the solution of a coefficient inverse problem of simultaneous reconstruction of the dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability functions in the Maxwell's system using limited boundary observations of the electric field in 3D. We derive a posteriori error estimates in the Tikhonov functional to be minimized and in the regularized solution of this functional, as well as formulate the corresponding adaptive algorithm. Our numerical...

In this paper we propose a finite element method for the approximation of second order elliptic problems on composite grids. The method is based on continuous piecewise polynomial approximation on each grid and weak enforcement of the proper continuity at an artificial interface defined by edges (or faces) of one the grids. We prove optimal order a priori and energy type a posteriori error estimates in 2 and 3 space dimensions, and present some numerical examples.

The paper presents an a posteriori error estimator for a (piecewise linear) nonconforming finite element approximation of the heat equation in , or 3, using backward Euler’s scheme. For this discretization, we derive a residual indicator, which use a spatial residual indicator based on the jumps of normal and tangential derivatives of the nonconforming approximation and a time residual indicator based on the jump of broken gradients at each time step. Lower and upper bounds form the...

In this note, we propose and analyse a method for handling interfaces between non-matching grids based on an approach suggested by Nitsche (1971) for the approximation of Dirichlet boundary conditions. The exposition is limited to self-adjoint elliptic problems, using Poisson’s equation as a model. A priori and a posteriori error estimates are given. Some numerical results are included.
