Recovering an algebraic curve using its projections from different points. Applications to static and dynamic computational vision

Jeremy Yirmeyahu Kaminski, Michael Fryers, Mina Teicher (2005)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

Similarity:

We study some geometric configurations related to projections of an irreducible algebraic curve embedded in 3 onto embedded projective planes. These configurations are motivated by applications to static and dynamic computational vision. More precisely, we study how an irreducible closed algebraic curve X embedded in 3 , of degree d and genus g , can be recovered using its projections from points onto embedded projective planes. The embeddings are unknown. The only input is the defining...

The Brauer–Manin obstruction for curves having split Jacobians

Samir Siksek (2004)

Journal de Théorie des Nombres de Bordeaux

Similarity:

Let X 𝒜 be a non-constant morphism from a curve X to an abelian variety 𝒜 , all defined over a number field k . Suppose that X is a counterexample to the Hasse principle. We give sufficient conditions for the failure of the Hasse principle on X to be accounted for by the Brauer–Manin obstruction. These sufficiency conditions are slightly stronger than assuming that 𝒜 ( k ) and Ш ( 𝒜 / k ) are finite.

A group law on smooth real quartics having at least 3 real branches

Johan Huisman (2002)

Journal de théorie des nombres de Bordeaux

Similarity:

Let C be a smooth real quartic curve in 2 . Suppose that C has at least 3 real branches B 1 , B 2 , B 3 . Let B = B 1 × B 2 × B 3 and let O B . Let τ O be the map from B into the neutral component Jac ( C ) ( ) 0 of the set of real points of the jacobian of C , defined by letting τ O ( P ) be the divisor class of the divisor P i - O i . Then, τ O is a bijection. We show that this allows an explicit geometric description of the group law on Jac ( C ) ( ) 0 . It generalizes the classical geometric description of the group law on the neutral component of the set of real...

Rational points on curves

Michael Stoll (2011)

Journal de Théorie des Nombres de Bordeaux

Similarity:

This is an extended version of an invited lecture I gave at the Journées Arithmétiques in St. Étienne in July 2009. We discuss the state of the art regarding the problem of finding the set of rational points on a (smooth projective) geometrically integral curve  C over  . The focus is on practical aspects of this problem in the case that the genus of  C is at least  2 , and therefore the set of rational points is finite.

Green's generic syzygy conjecture for curves of even genus lying on a K3 surface

Claire Voisin (2002)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

Similarity:

We consider the generic Green conjecture on syzygies of a canonical curve, and particularly the following reformulation thereof: For a smooth projective curve C of genus g in characteristic 0, the condition Cliff C > l is equivalent to the fact that K g - l ' - 2 , 1 ( C , K C ) = 0 , l ' l . We propose a new approach, which allows up to prove this result for generic curves C of genus g ( C ) and gonality gon(C) in the range g ( C ) 3 + 1 gon(C) g ( C ) 2 + 1 .

A differential equation related to the l p -norms

Jacek Bojarski, Tomasz Małolepszy, Janusz Matkowski (2011)

Annales Polonici Mathematici

Similarity:

Let p ∈ (1,∞). The question of existence of a curve in ℝ₊² starting at (0,0) and such that at every point (x,y) of this curve, the l p -distance of the points (x,y) and (0,0) is equal to the Euclidean length of the arc of this curve between these points is considered. This problem reduces to a nonlinear differential equation. The existence and uniqueness of solutions is proved and nonelementary explicit solutions are given.

On ramified covers of the projective plane II: Generalizing Segre’s theory

Michael Friedman, Rebecca Lehman, Maxim Leyenson, Mina Teicher (2012)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

Similarity:

The classical Segre theory gives a necessary and sufficient condition for a plane curve to be a branch curve of a (generic) projection of a smooth surface in 3 . We generalize this result for smooth surfaces in a projective space of any dimension in the following way: given two plane curves, B and E , we give a necessary and sufficient condition for B to be the branch curve of a surface X in N and E to be the image of the double curve of a 3 -model of X . In the classical Segre theory, a...

Preperiodic dynatomic curves for z z d + c

Yan Gao (2016)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

The preperiodic dynatomic curve n , p is the closure in ℂ² of the set of (c,z) such that z is a preperiodic point of the polynomial z z d + c with preperiod n and period p (n,p ≥ 1). We prove that each n , p has exactly d-1 irreducible components, which are all smooth and have pairwise transverse intersections at the singular points of n , p . We also compute the genus of each component and the Galois group of the defining polynomial of n , p .

Degree of the fibres of an elliptic fibration

Similarity:

Let X B an elliptic fibration with general fibre F . Let n e , n s , n a , n v be the minima of the non-zero intersection numbers ( , F ) where runs successively through the following sets: effective divisors on X , invertible sheaves spanned by global sections, ample divisors and very ample divisors. Let m be the maximum of the multiplicities of the fibres of X B . We prove that n e = n s if and only if n e 2 m and that n a = n v if and only if n a 3 m .

Rational Points on Certain Hyperelliptic Curves over Finite Fields

Maciej Ulas (2007)

Bulletin of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Mathematics

Similarity:

Let K be a field, a,b ∈ K and ab ≠ 0. Consider the polynomials g₁(x) = xⁿ+ax+b, g₂(x) = xⁿ+ax²+bx, where n is a fixed positive integer. We show that for each k≥ 2 the hypersurface given by the equation S k i : u ² = j = 1 k g i ( x j ) , i=1,2, contains a rational curve. Using the above and van de Woestijne’s recent results we show how to construct a rational point different from the point at infinity on the curves C i : y ² = g i ( x ) , (i=1,2) defined over a finite field, in polynomial time.

On Zariski's theorem in positive characteristic

Ilya Tyomkin (2013)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

Similarity:

In the current paper we show that the dimension of a family V of irreducible reduced curves in a given ample linear system on a toric surface S over an algebraically closed field is bounded from above by - K S . C + p g ( C ) - 1 , where C denotes a general curve in the family. This result generalizes a famous theorem of Zariski to the case of positive characteristic. We also explore new phenomena that occur in positive characteristic: We show that the equality 𝚍𝚒𝚖 ( V ) = - K S . C + p g ( C ) - 1 does not imply the nodality of C even if C belongs...

Labeled floor diagrams for plane curves

Sergey Fomin, Grigory Mikhalkin (2010)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

Similarity:

Floor diagrams are a class of weighted oriented graphs introduced by E. Brugallé and the second author. Tropical geometry arguments lead to combinatorial descriptions of (ordinary and relative) Gromov–Witten invariants of projective spaces in terms of floor diagrams and their generalizations. In a number of cases, these descriptions can be used to obtain explicit (direct or recursive) formulas for the corresponding enumerative invariants. In particular, we use this approach to enumerate...

Stein open subsets with analytic complements in compact complex spaces

In the q -Frobenius nonclassical cases, we determine the exact number of q -rational points. In the remaining cases, an upper bound for the number of q -rational points will follow from Stöhr-Voloch...
