Recursive form of general limited memory variable metric methods

Ladislav Lukšan, Jan Vlček (2013)

Kybernetika

Similarity:

In this report we propose a new recursive matrix formulation of limited memory variable metric methods. This approach can be used for an arbitrary update from the Broyden class (and some other updates) and also for the approximation of both the Hessian matrix and its inverse. The new recursive formulation requires approximately 4 m n multiplications and additions per iteration, so it is comparable with other efficient limited memory variable metric methods. Numerical experiments concerning...

On finite sum theorems for transfinite inductive dimensions

Vitalij Chatyrko (1999)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

We discuss the exactness of estimates in the finite sum theorems for transfinite inductive dimensions trind and trInd. The technique obtained gives an opportunity to repeat and sometimes strengthen some well known results about compacta with trind ≠ trInd. In particular we improve an estimate of the small transfinite inductive dimension of Smirnov’s compacta S α , α < ω 1 , given by Luxemburg [Lu2].

ℳ-rank and meager types

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

Assume T is superstable and small. Using the multiplicity rank ℳ we find locally modular types in the same manner as U-rank considerations yield regular types. We define local versions of ℳ-rank, which also yield meager types.

On spirals and fixed point property

Roman Mańka (1994)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

We study the famous examples of G. S. Young [7] and R. H. Bing [2]. We generalize and simplify a little their constructions. First we introduce Young spirals which play a basic role in all considerations. We give a construction of a Young spiral which does not have the fixed point property (see Section 5) . Then, using Young spirals, we define two classes of uniquely arcwise connected curves, called Young spaces and Bing spaces. These classes are analogous to the examples mentioned above....

Nonmetrizable topological dynamical characterization of central sets

Hong-Ting Shi, Hong-Wei Yang (1996)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

Without the restriction of metrizability, topological dynamical systems ( X , T s s G ) are defined and uniform recurrence and proximality are studied. Some well known results are generalized and some new results are obtained. In particular, a topological dynamical characterization of central sets in an arbitrary semigroup (G,+) is given and shown to be equivalent to the usual algebraic characterization.
