A sliding Mesh-Mortar method for a two dimensional Eddy currents model of electric engines

Annalisa Buffa, Yvon Maday, Francesca Rapetti (2001)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

Similarity:

The paper deals with the application of a non-conforming domain decomposition method to the problem of the computation of induced currents in electric engines with moving conductors. The eddy currents model is considered as a quasi-static approximation of Maxwell equations and we study its two-dimensional formulation with either the modified magnetic vector potential or the magnetic field as primary variable. Two discretizations are proposed, the first one based on curved finite elements...

Computing guided modes for an unbounded stratified medium in integrated optics

Fabrice Mahé (2001)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

Similarity:

We present a finite element method to compute guided modes in a stratified medium. The major difficulty to overcome is related to the unboundedness of the stratified medium. Our method is an alternative to the use of artificial boundary conditions and to the use of integral representation formulae. The domain is bounded in such a way we can write the solution on its lateral boundaries in terms of Fourier series. The series is then truncated for the computations over the bounded domain....

The boundary behavior of a composite material

Maria Neuss-Radu (2001)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

Similarity:

In this paper, we study how solutions to elliptic problems with periodically oscillating coefficients behave in the neighborhood of the boundary of a domain. We extend the results known for flat boundaries to domains with curved boundaries in the case of a layered medium. This is done by generalizing the notion of boundary layer and by defining boundary correctors which lead to an approximation of order ε in the energy norm.

Computation of the demagnetizing potential in micromagnetics using a coupled finite and infinite elements method

François Alouges (2010)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

Similarity:

This paper is devoted to the practical computation of the magnetic potential induced by a distribution of magnetization in the theory of micromagnetics. The problem turns out to be a coupling of an interior and an exterior problem. The aim of this work is to describe a complete method that mixes the approaches of Ying [12] and Goldstein [6] which consists in constructing a mesh for the exterior domain composed of homothetic layers. It has the advantage of being well suited for...

Discrete Sobolev inequalities and L p error estimates for finite volume solutions of convection diffusion equations

Yves Coudière, Thierry Gallouët, Raphaèle Herbin (2001)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

Similarity:

The topic of this work is to obtain discrete Sobolev inequalities for piecewise constant functions, and to deduce L p error estimates on the approximate solutions of convection diffusion equations by finite volume schemes.

Crack detection using electrostatic measurements

Martin Brühl, Martin Hanke, Michael Pidcock (2001)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

Similarity:

In this paper we extend recent work on the detection of inclusions using electrostatic measurements to the problem of crack detection in a two-dimensional object. As in the inclusion case our method is based on a factorization of the difference between two Neumann-Dirichlet operators. The factorization possible in the case of cracks is much simpler than that for inclusions and the analysis is greatly simplified. However, the directional information carried by the crack makes the practical...

Mesh r-adaptation for unilateral contact problems

Pierre Béal, Jonas Koko, Rachid Touzani (2002)

International Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science

Similarity:

We present a mesh adaptation method by node movement for two-dimensional linear elasticity problems with unilateral contact. The adaptation is based on a hierarchical estimator on finite element edges and the node displacement techniques use an analogy of the mesh topology with a spring network. We show, through numerical examples, the efficiency of the present adaptation method.
