Presentation of the singular part of the Brauer monoid

Victor Maltcev, Volodymyr Mazorchuk (2007)

Mathematica Bohemica

We obtain a presentation for the singular part of the Brauer monoid with respect to an irreducible system of generators consisting of idempotents. As an application of this result we get a new construction of the symmetric group via connected sequences of subsets. Another application describes the lengths of elements in the singular part of the Brauer monoid with respect to the system of generators mentioned above.

Principal ideals of finitely generated commutative monoids

José Carlos Rosales, Juan Ignacio García-García (2002)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

We study the semigroups isomorphic to principal ideals of finitely generated commutative monoids. We define the concept of finite presentation for this kind of semigroups. Furthermore, we show how to obtain information on these semigroups from their presentations.

Properties of the subsemigroups of the bicyclic monoid

L. Descalço, N. Ruškuc (2008)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

In this paper we study some properties of the subsemigroups of the bicyclic monoid B, by using a recent description of its subsemigroups. We start by giving necessary and sufficient conditions for a subsemigroup to be finitely generated. Then we show that all finitely generated subsemigroups are automatic and finitely presented. Finally we prove that a subsemigroup of B is residually finite if and only if it does not contain a copy of B.
