Alternative approaches to the two-scale convergence

Two-scale convergence is a special weak convergence used in homogenization theory. Besides the original definition by Nguetseng and Allaire two alternative definitions are introduced and compared. They enable us to weaken requirements on the admissibility of test functions ψ ( x , y ) . Properties and examples are added.

We prove that the theorem of Egorov, on the canonical transformation of symbols of pseudodifferential operators conjugated by Fourier integral operators, can be sharpened. In this article we introduce an adaptive multi-level method in space and time for convection diffusion problems. The scheme is based on a multi-level spatial splitting and the use of different time-steps. The temporal discretization relies on the characteristics method. We derive an a posteriori error estimate and design a corresponding adaptive algorithm. The efficiency of the multi-level method is illustrated by numerical experiments, in particular for a convection-dominated problem.

Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena

Proteus mirabilis are bacteria that make strikingly regular spatial-temporal patterns on agar surfaces. In this paper we investigate a mathematical model that has been shown to display these structures when solved numerically. The model consists of an ordinary differential equation coupled with a partial differential equation involving a first-order hyperbolic aging term together with nonlinear degenerate diffusion. The system is shown to admit global weak solutions.
