Affine surfaces with parallel shape operators

Włodzimierz Jelonek (1992)

Annales Polonici Mathematici

We study affine nondegenerate Blaschke hypersurfaces whose shape operators are parallel with respect to the induced Blaschke connections. We classify such surfaces and thus give an exact classification of extremal locally symmetric surfaces, first described by F. Dillen.

Affinely equivalent complete flat manifolds

Michal Sadowski (2004)

Open Mathematics

Let E Aff(Γ,G, m) be the set of affine equivalence classes of m-dimensional complete flat manifolds with a fixed fundamental group Γ and a fixed holonomy group G. Let n be the dimension of a closed flat manifold whose fundamental group is isomorphic to Γ. We describe E Aff(Γ,G, m) in terms of equivalence classes of pairs (ε, ρ), consisting of epimorphisms of Γ onto G and representations of G in ℝm-n. As an application we give some estimates of card E Aff(Γ,G, m).

Affinely invariant symmetry sets

Peter Giblin (2008)

Banach Center Publications

The classical medial axis and symmetry set of a smooth simple plane curve M, depending as they do on circles bitangent to M, are invariant under euclidean transformations. This article surveys the various ways in which the construction has been adapted to be invariant under affine transformations. They include affine distance and area constructions, and also the 'centre symmetry set' which generalizes central symmetry. A connexion is also made with the tricentre set of a convex plane curve, which...

Affinor structures in the oscillation theory

Boris N. Shapukov (2002)

Banach Center Publications

In this paper we consider the system of Hamiltonian differential equations, which determines small oscillations of a dynamical system with n parameters. We demonstrate that this system determines an affinor structure J on the phase space TRⁿ. If J² = ωI, where ω = ±1,0, the phase space can be considered as the biplanar space of elliptic, hyperbolic or parabolic type. In the Euclidean case (Rⁿ = Eⁿ) we obtain the Hopf bundle and its analogs. The bases of these bundles are, respectively, the projective...

Alexandrov’s theorem, weighted Delaunay triangulations, and mixed volumes

Alexander I. Bobenko, Ivan Izmestiev (2008)

Annales de l’institut Fourier

We present a constructive proof of Alexandrov’s theorem on the existence of a convex polytope with a given metric on the boundary. The polytope is obtained by deforming certain generalized convex polytopes with the given boundary. We study the space of generalized convex polytopes and discover a connection with weighted Delaunay triangulations of polyhedral surfaces. The existence of the deformation follows from the non-degeneracy of the Hessian of the total scalar curvature of generalized convex...

Algebraic analysis of the Rarita-Schwinger system in real dimension three

Alberto Damiano (2006)

Archivum Mathematicum

In this paper we use the explicit description of the Spin– 3 2 Dirac operator in real dimension 3 appeared in (Homma, Y., The Higher Spin Dirac Operators on 3 –Dimensional Manifolds. Tokyo J. Math. 24 (2001), no. 2, 579–596.) to perform the algebraic analysis of the space of nullsolution of the system of equations given by several Rarita–Schwinger operators. We make use of the general theory provided by (Colombo, F., Sabadini, I., Sommen, F., Struppa, D. C., Analysis of Dirac systems and computational...

Algebraic aspects of web geometry

Maks A. Akivis, Vladislav V. Goldberg (2000)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

Algebraic aspects of web geometry, namely its connections with the quasigroup and loop theory, the theory of local differential quasigroups and loops, and the theory of local algebras are discussed.
