Borel sets with σ-compact sections for nonseparable spaces

Petr Holický (2008)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

We prove that every (extended) Borel subset E of X × Y, where X is complete metric and Y is Polish, can be covered by countably many extended Borel sets with compact sections if the sections E x = y Y : ( x , y ) E , x ∈ X, are σ-compact. This is a nonseparable version of a theorem of Saint Raymond. As a by-product, we get a proof of Saint Raymond’s result which does not use transfinite induction.

Strong Cohomological Dimension

Jerzy Dydak, Akira Koyama (2008)

Bulletin of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Mathematics

Similarity:

We characterize strong cohomological dimension of separable metric spaces in terms of extension of mappings. Using this characterization, we discuss the relation between strong cohomological dimension and (ordinal) cohomological dimension and give examples to clarify their gaps. We also show that I n d G X = d i m G X if X is a separable metric ANR and G is a countable Abelian group. Hence d i m X = d i m X for any separable metric ANR X.

Some versions of second countability of metric spaces in ZF and their role to compactness

Kyriakos Keremedis (2018)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

Similarity:

In the realm of metric spaces we show in ZF that: (i) A metric space is compact if and only if it is countably compact and for every ε > 0 , every cover by open balls of radius ε has a countable subcover. (ii) Every second countable metric space has a countable base consisting of open balls if and only if the axiom of countable choice restricted to subsets of holds true. (iii) A countably compact metric space is separable if and only if it is second countable.

On real flag manifolds with cup-length equal to its dimension

Marko Radovanović (2020)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Similarity:

We prove that for any positive integers n 1 , n 2 , ... , n k there exists a real flag manifold F ( 1 , ... , 1 , n 1 , n 2 , ... , n k ) with cup-length equal to its dimension. Additionally, we give a necessary condition that an arbitrary real flag manifold needs to satisfy in order to have cup-length equal to its dimension.

Pointwise convergence and the Wadge hierarchy

Alessandro Andretta, Alberto Marcone (2001)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

Similarity:

We show that if X is a Σ 1 1 separable metrizable space which is not σ -compact then C p * ( X ) , the space of bounded real-valued continuous functions on X with the topology of pointwise convergence, is Borel- Π 1 1 -complete. Assuming projective determinacy we show that if X is projective not σ -compact and n is least such that X is Σ n 1 then C p ( X ) , the space of real-valued continuous functions on X with the topology of pointwise convergence, is Borel- Π n 1 -complete. We also prove a simultaneous improvement of theorems...

The effective Borel hierarchy

M. Vanden Boom (2007)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

Let K be a subclass of Mod() which is closed under isomorphism. Vaught showed that K is Σ α (respectively, Π α ) in the Borel hierarchy iff K is axiomatized by an infinitary Σ α (respectively, Π α ) sentence. We prove a generalization of Vaught’s theorem for the effective Borel hierarchy, i.e. the Borel sets formed by union and complementation over c.e. sets. This result says that we can axiomatize an effective Σ α or effective Π α Borel set with a computable infinitary sentence of the same complexity....

Decomposing Borel functions using the Shore-Slaman join theorem

Takayuki Kihara (2015)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

Jayne and Rogers proved that every function from an analytic space into a separable metrizable space is decomposable into countably many continuous functions with closed domains if and only if the preimage of each F σ set under that function is again F σ . Many researchers conjectured that the Jayne-Rogers theorem can be generalized to all finite levels of Borel functions. In this paper, by using the Shore-Slaman join theorem on the Turing degrees, we show the following variant of the Jayne-Rogers...

A poset of topologies on the set of real numbers

Vitalij A. Chatyrko, Yasunao Hattori (2013)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

Similarity:

On the set of real numbers we consider a poset 𝒫 τ ( ) (by inclusion) of topologies τ ( A ) , where A , such that A 1 A 2 iff τ ( A 1 ) τ ( A 2 ) . The poset has the minimal element τ ( ) , the Euclidean topology, and the maximal element τ ( ) , the Sorgenfrey topology. We are interested when two topologies τ 1 and τ 2 (especially, for τ 2 = τ ( ) ) from the poset define homeomorphic spaces ( , τ 1 ) and ( , τ 2 ) . In particular, we prove that for a closed subset A of the space ( , τ ( A ) ) is homeomorphic to the Sorgenfrey line ( , τ ( ) ) iff A is countable. We study also common...

Consistency of the Silver dichotomy in generalised Baire space

Sy-David Friedman (2014)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

Silver’s fundamental dichotomy in the classical theory of Borel reducibility states that any Borel (or even co-analytic) equivalence relation with uncountably many classes has a perfect set of classes. The natural generalisation of this to the generalised Baire space κ κ for a regular uncountable κ fails in Gödel’s L, even for κ-Borel equivalence relations. We show here that Silver’s dichotomy for κ-Borel equivalence relations in κ κ for uncountable regular κ is however consistent (with...

Generators for algebras dense in L p -spaces

Alexander J. Izzo, Bo Li (2013)

Studia Mathematica

Similarity:

For various L p -spaces (1 ≤ p < ∞) we investigate the minimum number of complex-valued functions needed to generate an algebra dense in the space. The results depend crucially on the regularity imposed on the generators. For μ a positive regular Borel measure on a compact metric space there always exists a single bounded measurable function that generates an algebra dense in L p ( μ ) . For M a Riemannian manifold-with-boundary of finite volume there always exists a single continuous function...

Some Čebyšev sets with dimension d + 1 in hyperspaces over d

R. J. MacG. Dawson (2009)

Banach Center Publications

Similarity:

A Čebyšev set in a metric space is one such that every point of the space has a unique nearest neighbour in the set. In Euclidean spaces, this property is equivalent to being closed, convex, and nonempty, but in other spaces classification of Čebyšev sets may be significantly more difficult. In particular, in hyperspaces over normed linear spaces several quite different classes of Čebyšev sets are known, with no unifying description. Some new families of Čebyšev sets in hyperspaces are...
