Cycles of links and fixed points for orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the open unit disk

Juliana Xavier (2012)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Michael Handel proved the existence of a fixed point for an orientation preserving homeomorphism of the open unit disk that can be extended to the closed disk, provided that it has points whose orbits form an oriented cycle of links at infinity. More recently, the author generalized Handel's theorem to a wider class of cycles of links. In this paper we complete this topic describing exactly which are all the cycles of links forcing the existence of a fixed point.

Diagonal points having dense orbit

T. K. Subrahmonian Moothathu (2010)

Colloquium Mathematicae

Let f: X→ X be a topologically transitive continuous map of a compact metric space X. We investigate whether f can have the following stronger properties: (i) for each m ∈ ℕ, f × f ² × × f m : X m X m is transitive, (ii) for each m ∈ ℕ, there exists x ∈ X such that the diagonal m-tuple (x,x,...,x) has a dense orbit in X m under the action of f × f ² × × f m . We show that (i), (ii) and weak mixing are equivalent for minimal homeomorphisms, that all mixing interval maps satisfy (ii), and that there are mixing subshifts not satisfying (ii)....

Dynamical characterization of C-sets and its application

Jian Li (2012)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

We set up a general correspondence between algebraic properties of βℕ and sets defined by dynamical properties. In particular, we obtain a dynamical characterization of C-sets, i.e., sets satisfying the strong Central Sets Theorem. As an application, we show that Rado systems are solvable in C-sets.

Equicontinuity, shadowing and distality in general topological spaces

Huoyun Wang (2020)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

We consider the notions of equicontinuity point, sensitivity point and so on from a topological point of view. Many of these notions can be sensibly defined either in terms of (finite) open covers or uniformities. We show that for the notions of equicontinuity point and sensitivity point, Hausdorff or uniform versions coincide in compact Hausdorff spaces and are equivalent to the standard definitions stated in terms of a metric in compact metric spaces. We prove that a uniformly chain transitive...

Flow compactifications of nondiscrete monoids, idempotents and Hindman’s theorem

Richard N. Ball, James N. Hagler (2003)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

We describe the extension of the multiplication on a not-necessarily-discrete topological monoid to its flow compactification. We offer two applications. The first is a nondiscrete version of Hindman’s Theorem, and the second is a characterization of the projective minimal and elementary flows in terms of idempotents of the flow compactification of the monoid.

Fonctions de récurrence des suites d’Arnoux-Rauzy et réponse à une question de Morse et Hedlund

Julien Cassaigne, Nataliya Chekhova (2006)

Forcing relation on interval patterns

Jozef Bobok (2005)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

We consider-without restriction to the piecewise monotone case-a forcing relation on interval (transitive, roof, bottom) patterns. We prove some basic properties of this type of forcing and explain when it is a partial ordering. Finally, we show how our approach relates to the results known from the literature.

Generalized recurrence, compactifications, and the Lyapunov topology

Ethan Akin, Joseph Auslander (2010)

Studia Mathematica

We study generalized recurrence for closed relations on locally compact spaces. This includes continuous maps and real flows. The main tools are Lyapunov functions and their compactifications. Under certain conditions it is shown that the Lyapunov functions determine the topology of the space.

Generic diffeomorphisms on compact surfaces

Flavio Abdenur, Christian Bonatti, Sylvain Crovisier, Lorenzo J. Díaz (2005)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

We discuss the remaining obstacles to prove Smale's conjecture about the C¹-density of hyperbolicity among surface diffeomorphisms. Using a C¹-generic approach, we classify the possible pathologies that may obstruct the C¹-density of hyperbolicity. We show that there are essentially two types of obstruction: (i) persistence of infinitely many hyperbolic homoclinic classes and (ii) existence of a single homoclinic class which robustly exhibits homoclinic tangencies. In the course of our discussion,...

Large sets of integers and hierarchy of mixing properties of measure preserving systems

Vitaly Bergelson, Tomasz Downarowicz (2008)

Colloquium Mathematicae

We consider a hierarchy of notions of largeness for subsets of ℤ (such as thick sets, syndetic sets, IP-sets, etc., as well as some new classes) and study them in conjunction with recurrence in topological dynamics and ergodic theory. We use topological dynamics and topological algebra in βℤ to establish connections between various notions of largeness and apply those results to the study of the sets R A , B ε = n : μ ( A T B ) > μ ( A ) μ ( B ) - ε of times of “fat intersection”. Among other things we show that the sets R A , B ε allow one to distinguish...

Non-abelian extensions of minimal rotations

Ulrich Haböck, Vyacheslav Kulagin (2009)

Colloquium Mathematicae

We consider continuous extensions of minimal rotations on a locally connected compact group X by cocycles taking values in locally compact Lie groups and prove regularity (i.e. the existence of orbit closures which project onto the whole basis X) in certain special situations beyond the nilpotent case. We further discuss an open question on cocycles acting on homogeneous spaces which seems to be the missing key for a general regularity theorem.
