On a certain map of a triangle

Grzegorz Świrszcz (1998)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

The paper answers some questions asked by Sharkovski concerning the map F:(u,v) ↦ (u(4-u-v),uv) of the triangle Δ = u,v ≥ 0: u+v ≤ 4. We construct an absolutely continuous σ-finite invariant measure for F. We also prove the following strange phenomenon. The preimages of side I = Δ ∩ v=0 form a dense subset F - n ( I ) of Δ and there is another dense set Λ consisting of points whose orbits approach the interval I but are not attracted by I.

On a compactification of the homeomorphism group of the pseudo-arc

Kazuhiro Kawamura (1991)

Colloquium Mathematicae

A continuum means a compact connected metric space. For a continuum X, H(X) denotes the space of all homeomorphisms of X with the compact-open topology. It is well known that H(X) is a completely metrizable, separable topological group. J. Kennedy [8] considered a compactification of H(X) and studied its properties when X has various types of homogeneity. In this paper we are concerned with the compactification G P of the homeomorphism group of the pseudo-arc P, which is obtained by the method of...

On a discrete version of the antipodal theorem

Krzysztof Oleszkiewicz (1996)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

The classical theorem of Borsuk and Ulam [2] says that for any continuous mapping f : S k k there exists a point x S k such that f(-x) = f(x). In this note a discrete version of the antipodal theorem is proved in which S k is replaced by the set of vertices of a high-dimensional cube equipped with Hamming’s metric. In place of equality we obtain some optimal estimates of i n f x | | f ( x ) - f ( - x ) | | which were previously known (as far as the author knows) only for f linear (cf. [1]).
