The polar curve of a foliation on 2

Rogério S. Mol (2010)

Annales de la faculté des sciences de Toulouse Mathématiques

We study some properties of the polar curve P l associated to a singular holomorphic foliation on the complex projective plane 2 . We prove that, for a generic center l 2 , the curve P l is irreducible and its singular points are exactly the singular points of with vanishing linear part. We also obtain upper bounds for the algebraic multiplicities of the singularities of and for its number of radial singularities.

The positive mass theorem for ALE manifolds

Mattias Dahl (1997)

Banach Center Publications

We show what extra condition is necessary to be able to use the positive mass argument of Witten [12] on an asymptotically locally euclidean manifold. Specifically we show that the 'generalized positive action conjecture' holds if one assumes that the signature of the manifold has the correct value.

The principal prolongation of first order G -structures

Slovák, Jan (1996)

Proceedings of the Winter School "Geometry and Physics"

The author uses the concept of the first principal prolongation of an arbitrary principal filter bundle to develop an alternative procedure for constructing the prolongations of a class of the first-order G -structures. The motivation comes from the almost Hermitian structures, which can be defined either as standard first-order structures, or higher-order structures, but if they do not admit a torsion-free connection, the classical constructions fail in general.

The proportionality constant for the simplicial volume of locally symmetric spaces

Michelle Bucher-Karlsson (2008)

Colloquium Mathematicae

We follow ideas going back to Gromov's seminal article [Publ. Math. IHES 56 (1982)] to show that the proportionality constant relating the simplicial volume and the volume of a closed, oriented, locally symmetric space M = Γ∖G/K of noncompact type is equal to the Gromov norm of the volume form in the continuous cohomology of G. The proportionality constant thus becomes easier to compute. Furthermore, this method also gives a simple proof of the proportionality principle for arbitrary manifolds.

The Quantum Birkhoff Normal Form and Spectral Asymptotics

San Vũ Ngọc (2006)

Journées Équations aux dérivées partielles

In this talk we explain a simple treatment of the quantum Birkhoff normal form for semiclassical pseudo-differential operators with smooth coefficients. The normal form is applied to describe the discrete spectrum in a generalised non-degenerate potential well, yielding uniform estimates in the energy E . This permits a detailed study of the spectrum in various asymptotic regions of the parameters ( E , ) , and gives improvements and new proofs for many of the results in the field. In the completely resonant...
