On the existence of 2-fields in 8-dimensional vector bundles over 8-complexes

Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of two linearly independent sections in an 8-dimensional spin vector bundle over a CW-complex of the same dimension are given in terms of characteristic classes and a certain secondary cohomology operation. In some cases this operation is computed.

Let E be an oriented, smooth and closed m-dimensional manifold with m ≥ 2 and V ⊂ E an oriented, connected, smooth and closed (m-2)-dimensional submanifold which is homologous to zero in E. Let S n - 2 S be the standard inclusion, where Sⁿ is the n-sphere and n ≥ 3. We prove the following extension result: if h : V S n - 2 is a smooth map, then h extends to a smooth map g: E → Sⁿ transverse to S n - 2 and with g - 1 ( S n - 2 ) = V . On the finiteness of the fundamental group of a compact shrinking Ricci soliton

Myers's classical theorem says that a compact Riemannian manifold with positive Ricci curvature has finite fundamental group. Using Ambrose's compactness criterion or J. Lott's results, M. Fernández-López and E. García-Río showed that the finiteness of the fundamental group remains valid for a compact shrinking Ricci soliton. We give a self-contained proof of this fact by estimating the lengths of shortest geodesic loops in each homotopy class.

We show that the first homology group of a locally connected compact metric space is either uncountable or finitely generated. This is related to Shelah's well-known result (1988) which shows that the fundamental group of such a space satisfies a similar condition. We give an example of such a space whose fundamental group is uncountable but whose first homology is trivial, showing that our result does not follow from Shelah's.
