A mixed–FEM and BEM coupling for a three-dimensional eddy current problem

Salim Meddahi, Virginia Selgas (2003)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

Similarity:

We study in this paper the electromagnetic field generated in a conductor by an alternating current density. The resulting interface problem (see Bossavit (1993)) between the metal and the dielectric medium is treated by a mixed–FEM and BEM coupling method. We prove that our BEM-FEM formulation is well posed and that it leads to a convergent Galerkin method.

Mixed finite element approximation of an MHD problem involving conducting and insulating regions : the 2D case

Jean Luc Guermond, Peter D. Minev (2002)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

Similarity:

We show that the Maxwell equations in the low frequency limit, in a domain composed of insulating and conducting regions, has a saddle point structure, where the electric field in the insulating region is the Lagrange multiplier that enforces the curl-free constraint on the magnetic field. We propose a mixed finite element technique for solving this problem, and we show that, under mild regularity assumption on the data, Lagrange finite elements can be used as an alternative to edge...

A finite element scheme for the evolution of orientational order in fluid membranes

Sören Bartels, Georg Dolzmann, Ricardo H. Nochetto (2010)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

Similarity:

We investigate the evolution of an almost flat membrane driven by competition of the homogeneous, Frank, and bending energies as well as the coupling of the local order of the constituent molecules of the membrane to its curvature. We propose an alternative to the model in [J.B. Fournier and P. Galatoa, (1997) 1509–1520; N. Uchida, (2002) 040902] which replaces a Ginzburg-Landau penalization for the length of the order parameter by a rigid constraint. We...

The treatment of “pinching locking” in 3 D -shell elements

Dominique Chapelle, Anca Ferent, Patrick Le Tallec (2003)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

Similarity:

We consider a family of shell finite elements with quadratic displacements across the thickness. These elements are very attractive, but compared to standard general shell elements they face another source of numerical locking in addition to shear and membrane locking. This additional locking phenomenon – that we call “pinching locking” – is the subject of this paper and we analyse a numerical strategy designed to overcome this difficulty. Using a model problem in which only this specific...

Locking free matching of different three dimensional models in structural mechanics

Patrick Le Tallec, Saloua Mani Aouadi (2007)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

Similarity:

The present paper proposes and analyzes a general locking free mixed strategy for computing the deformation of incompressible three dimensional structures placed inside flexible membranes. The model involves as in Chapelle and Ferent [ (2003) 573–595] a bending dominated shell envelope and a quasi incompressible elastic body. The present work extends an earlier work of Arnold and Brezzi [ (1997) 1–14] treating the shell part and proposes a global...

On solution to an optimal shape design problem in 3-dimensional linear magnetostatics

Dalibor Lukáš (2004)

Applications of Mathematics

Similarity:

In this paper we present theoretical, computational, and practical aspects concerning 3-dimensional shape optimization governed by linear magnetostatics. The state solution is approximated by the finite element method using Nédélec elements on tetrahedra. Concerning optimization, the shape controls the interface between the air and the ferromagnetic parts while the whole domain is fixed. We prove the existence of an optimal shape. Then we state a finite element approximation to the optimization...

Phase field model for mode III crack growth in two dimensional elasticity

Takeshi Takaishi, Masato Kimura (2009)

Kybernetika

Similarity:

A phase field model for anti-plane shear crack growth in two dimensional isotropic elastic material is proposed. We introduce a phase field to represent the shape of the crack with a regularization parameter ϵ > 0 and we approximate the Francfort–Marigo type energy using the idea of Ambrosio and Tortorelli. The phase field model is derived as a gradient flow of this regularized energy. We show several numerical examples of the crack growth computed with an adaptive mesh finite element method. ...
