Let $C$ be a smooth curve of genus $g$. For each positive integer $r$ the birational $r$-gonality $s_r\left(C\right)$ of $C$ is the minimal integer $t$ such that there is $L\in {\text{Pic}}^t\left(C\right)$ with $h^0(C,L)=r+1$. Fix an integer $r\ge 3$. In this paper we prove the existence of an integer $g_r$ such that for every integer $g\ge g_r$ there is a smooth curve $C$ of genus $g$ with $s_{r+1}\left(C\right)/(r+1)>s_r\left(C\right)/r$, i.e. in the sequence of all birational gonalities of $C$ at least one of the slope inequalities fails.

We prove a density version of the Carlson–Simpson Theorem. Specifically we show the following. For every integer $k\ge 2$ and every set $A$ of words over $k$ satisfying $\lim {\sup }_{n\to \infty }|A\cap {\left[k\right]}^n|/k^n>0$ there exist a word $c$ over $k$ and a sequence $\left(w_n\right)$ of left variable words over $k$ such that the set $c\cup \{c^{}{w}_0{\left(a_0\right)}^{}..{.}^{}{w}_n\left(a_n\right):n\in \mathbb{N}\text{and}{a}_0,...,a_n\in \left[k\right]\}$ is contained in $A$. While the result is infinite-dimensional its proof is based on an appropriate finite and quantitative version, also obtained in the paper.

Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $p\&gt;0$. Let $D_m$ be a ${BT}_m$ over $k$ (i.e., an $m$-truncated Barsotti–Tate group over $k$). Let $S$ be a $k$-scheme and let $X$ be a ${BT}_m$ over $S$. In this note we shall prove that for a continuous function $\varphi :\Delta \to {ℝ}^n$, where $\Delta \subset ℝ$,  the paratingent of $\varphi$ at $a\in \Delta$ is a non-empty and compact set in ${ℝ}^n$ if and only if $\varphi$ satisfies Lipschitz condition in a neighbourhood of $a$. We investigate how one can detect the dualizing property for a chain complex over a commutative local Noetherian ring $R$. Our focus is on homological properties of contracting endomorphisms of $R$, e.g., the Frobenius endomorphism when $R$ contains a field of positive characteristic.
