Large free subgroups of automorphism groups of ultrahomogeneous spaces

Szymon Głąb, Filip Strobin (2015)

Colloquium Mathematicae

We consider the following notion of largeness for subgroups of S . A group G is large if it contains a free subgroup on generators. We give a necessary condition for a countable structure A to have a large group Aut(A) of automorphisms. It turns out that any countable free subgroup of S can be extended to a large free subgroup of S , and, under Martin’s Axiom, any free subgroup of S of cardinality less than can also be extended to a large free subgroup of S . Finally, if Gₙ are countable groups, then...

Non-free two-generator subgroups of SL2(Q).

S. Peter Farbman (1995)

Publicacions Matemàtiques

The question of whether two parabolic elements A, B of SL2(C) are a free basis for the group they generate is considered. Some known results are generalized, using the parameter τ = tr(AB) - 2. If τ = a/b ∈ Q, |τ| < 4, and |a| ≤ 16, then the group is not free. If the subgroup generated by b in Z / aZ has a set of representatives, each of which divides one of b ± 1, then the subgroup of SL2(C) will not be free.

On an algorithm to decide whether a free group is a free factor of another

Pedro V. Silva, Pascal Weil (2008)

RAIRO - Theoretical Informatics and Applications - Informatique Théorique et Applications

We revisit the problem of deciding whether a finitely generated subgroup H is a free factor of a given free group F . Known algorithms solve this problem in time polynomial in the sum of the lengths of the generators of H and exponential in the rank of F . We show that the latter dependency can be made exponential in the rank difference rank ( F ) - rank ( H ) , which often makes a significant change.
