A new metric invariant for Banach spaces

F. Baudier, N. J. Kalton, G. Lancien (2010)

Studia Mathematica

We show that if the Szlenk index of a Banach space X is larger than the first infinite ordinal ω or if the Szlenk index of its dual is larger than ω, then the tree of all finite sequences of integers equipped with the hyperbolic distance metrically embeds into X. We show that the converse is true when X is assumed to be reflexive. As an application, we exhibit new classes of Banach spaces that are stable under coarse-Lipschitz embeddings and therefore under uniform homeomorphisms.

Chevet type inequality and norms of submatrices

Radosław Adamczak, Rafał Latała, Alexander E. Litvak, Alain Pajor, Nicole Tomczak-Jaegermann (2012)

Studia Mathematica

We prove a Chevet type inequality which gives an upper bound for the norm of an isotropic log-concave unconditional random matrix in terms of the expectation of the supremum of “symmetric exponential” processes, compared to the Gaussian ones in the Chevet inequality. This is used to give a sharp upper estimate for a quantity Γ k , m that controls uniformly the Euclidean operator norm of the submatrices with k rows and m columns of an isotropic log-concave unconditional random matrix. We apply these estimates...

Essentially-Euclidean convex bodies

Alexander E. Litvak, Vitali D. Milman, Nicole Tomczak-Jaegermann (2010)

Studia Mathematica

In this note we introduce a notion of essentially-Euclidean normed spaces (and convex bodies). Roughly speaking, an n-dimensional space is λ-essentially-Euclidean (with 0 < λ < 1) if it has a [λn]-dimensional subspace which has further proportional-dimensional Euclidean subspaces of any proportion. We consider a space X₁ = (ℝⁿ,||·||₁) with the property that if a space X₂ = (ℝⁿ,||·||₂) is "not too far" from X₁ then there exists a [λn]-dimensional subspace E⊂ ℝⁿ such that E₁ = (E,||·||₁) and...

Examples of k-iterated spreading models

Spiros A. Argyros, Pavlos Motakis (2013)

Studia Mathematica

It is shown that for every k ∈ ℕ and every spreading sequence eₙₙ that generates a uniformly convex Banach space E, there exists a uniformly convex Banach space X k + 1 admitting eₙₙ as a k+1-iterated spreading model, but not as a k-iterated one.

Higher order spreading models

S. A. Argyros, V. Kanellopoulos, K. Tyros (2013)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

We introduce higher order spreading models associated to a Banach space X. Their definition is based on ℱ-sequences ( x s ) s with ℱ a regular thin family and on plegma families. We show that the higher order spreading models of a Banach space X form an increasing transfinite hierarchy ( ξ ( X ) ) ξ < ω . Each ξ ( X ) contains all spreading models generated by ℱ-sequences ( x s ) s with order of ℱ equal to ξ. We also study the fundamental properties of this hierarchy.

On the distribution of random variables corresponding to Musielak-Orlicz norms

David Alonso-Gutiérrez, Sören Christensen, Markus Passenbrunner, Joscha Prochno (2013)

Studia Mathematica

Given a normalized Orlicz function M we provide an easy formula for a distribution such that, if X is a random variable distributed accordingly and X₁,...,Xₙ are independent copies of X, then 1 / C p | | x | | M | | ( x i X i ) i = 1 | | p C p | | x | | M , where C p is a positive constant depending only on p. In case p = 2 we need the function t ↦ tM’(t) - M(t) to be 2-concave and as an application immediately obtain an embedding of the corresponding Orlicz spaces into L₁[0,1]. We also provide a general result replacing the p -norm by an arbitrary N-norm. This...

On the structure of the set of higher order spreading models

Bünyamin Sarı, Konstantinos Tyros (2014)

Studia Mathematica

We generalize some results concerning the classical notion of a spreading model to spreading models of order ξ. Among other results, we prove that the set S M ξ w ( X ) of ξ-order spreading models of a Banach space X generated by subordinated weakly null ℱ-sequences endowed with the pre-partial order of domination is a semilattice. Moreover, if S M ξ w ( X ) contains an increasing sequence of length ω then it contains an increasing sequence of length ω₁. Finally, if S M ξ w ( X ) is uncountable, then it contains an antichain of size...

Smallest singular value of sparse random matrices

Alexander E. Litvak, Omar Rivasplata (2012)

Studia Mathematica

We extend probability estimates on the smallest singular value of random matrices with independent entries to a class of sparse random matrices. We show that one can relax a previously used condition of uniform boundedness of the variances from below. This allows us to consider matrices with null entries or, more generally, with entries having small variances. Our results do not assume identical distribution of the entries of a random matrix and help to clarify the role of the variances of the entries....

The cofinal property of the reflexive indecomposable Banach spaces

Spiros A. Argyros, Theocharis Raikoftsalis (2012)

Annales de l’institut Fourier

It is shown that every separable reflexive Banach space is a quotient of a reflexive hereditarily indecomposable space, which yields that every separable reflexive Banach is isomorphic to a subspace of a reflexive indecomposable space. Furthermore, every separable reflexive Banach space is a quotient of a reflexive complementably p -saturated space with 1 < p < and of a c 0 saturated space.

Universality, complexity and asymptotically uniformly smooth Banach spaces

Ryan M. Causey, Gilles Lancien (2023)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

For 1 < p , we show the existence of a Banach space which is both injectively and surjectively universal for the class of all separable Banach spaces with an equivalent p -asymptotically uniformly smooth norm. We prove that this class is analytic complete in the class of separable Banach spaces. These results extend previous works by N. J. Kalton, D. Werner and O. Kurka in the case p = .
