A universal modulus for normed spaces

We define a handy new modulus for normed spaces. More precisely, given any normed space X, we define in a canonical way a function ξ:[0,1)→ ℝ which depends only on the two-dimensional subspaces of X. We show that this function is strictly increasing and convex, and that its behaviour is intimately connected with the geometry of X. In particular, ξ tells us whether or not X is uniformly smooth, uniformly convex, uniformly non-square or an inner product space.

In the normed space of bounded operators between a pair of normed spaces, the set of operators which are "bounded below" forms the interior of the set of one-one operators. This note is concerned with the extension of this observation to certain spaces of pairs of operators.

It is known that ( p ) is not amenable for p = 1,2,∞, but whether or not ( p ) is amenable for p ∈ (1,∞) ∖ 2 is an open problem. We show that, if ( p ) is amenable for p ∈ (1,∞), then so are ( ( p ) ) and ( ( p ) ) . Moreover, if ( ( p ) ) is amenable so is ( , ( E ) ) for any index set and for any infinite-dimensional p -space E; in particular, if ( ( p ) ) is amenable for p ∈ (1,∞), then so is ( ( p ² ) ) . For a Banach space X, we show how the existence of a norm-one element u in X and a norm-one continuous bilinear mapping f: X x X --> X satisfying f(x,u) = f(u,x) = x for all x in X, together with some more intrinsic conditions, can be utilized to characterize X as a member of some relevant subclass of the class of Banach spaces.

On a Question of Pełczyński about Strictly Singular Operators

We exhibit new examples of weakly compact strictly singular operators with dual not strictly cosingular and characterize the weakly compact strictly singular surjections with strictly cosingular adjoint as those having strictly singular bitranspose. We then obtain new examples of super-strictly singular quotient maps and show that the strictly singular quotient maps in Kalton-Peck sequences are not super-strictly singular.

On Kottman's constants in Banach spaces

In this paper we modify a construction due to J. Taskinen to get a Fréchet space F which satisfies the density condition such that the complete injective tensor product l2 x~eF'b does not satisfy the strong dual density condition of Bierstedt and Bonet. Any bounded sequence in an L¹-space admits a subsequence which can be written as the sum of a sequence of pairwise disjoint elements and a sequence which forms a uniformly integrable or equiintegrable (equivalently, a relatively weakly compact) set. This is known as the Kadec-Pełczyński-Rosenthal subsequence splitting lemma and has been generalized to preduals of von Neuman algebras and of JBW*-algebras. In this note we generalize it to JBW*-triple preduals.

The super fixed point property for asymptotically nonexpansive mappings

We show that the super fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings and for asymptotically nonexpansive mappings in the intermediate sense are equivalent. As a consequence, we obtain fixed point theorems for asymptotically nonexpansive mappings in uniformly nonsquare and uniformly noncreasy Banach spaces. The results are generalized to commuting families of asymptotically nonexpansive mappings.
