Integral Formulae Associated with the Euler-Lagrange Operators of Multiple Integral Problems in the Calculus of Variations. (Short Communication).
In this work, we consider variational problems defined by -invariant Lagrangians on the -jet prolongation of a principal bundle , where is the structure group of . These problems can be also considered as defined on the associated bundle of the -th order connections. The correspondence between the Euler-Lagrange equations for these variational problems and conservation laws is discussed.
In the presented paper we apply the theory of Lepage forms on jet prolongations of fibred manifold with one-dimensional base to the relativistic mechanics. Using this geometrical theory, we obtain and discuss some well-known conservation laws in their general form and apply them to a concrete physical example.
We discuss a numerical formulation for the cell problem related to a homogenization approach for the study of wetting on micro rough surfaces. Regularity properties of the solution are described in details and it is shown that the problem is a convex one. Stability of the solution with respect to small changes of the cell bottom surface allows for an estimate of the numerical error, at least in two dimensions. Several benchmark experiments are presented and the reliability of the numerical solution...
We study a two-dimensional model for micromagnetics, which consists in an energy functional over -valued vector fields. Bounded-energy configurations tend to be planar, except in small regions which can be described as vortices (Bloch lines in physics). As the characteristic “exchange-length” tends to 0, they converge to planar divergence-free unit norm vector fields which jump along line singularities. We derive lower bounds for the energy, which are explicit functions of the jumps of the limit....

In the present context the variation is performed keeping the deformed configuration fixed while a suitable material stress tensor and the material coordinates are required to vary independently. The variational principle turns out to be equivalent to an equilibrium problem of placements and tractions prescribed at the boundary of a body of finite extent.
A conceptual numerical strategy for rate-independent processes in the energetic formulation is proposed and its convergence is proved under various rather mild data qualifications. The novelty is that we obtain convergence of subsequences of space-time discretizations even in case where the limit problem does not have a unique solution and we need no additional assumptions on higher regularity of the limit solution. The variety of general perspectives thus obtained is illustrated on several...
Mathematics Subject Classification: 26A33; 70H03, 70H25, 70S05; 49S05We treat the fractional order differential equation that contains the left and right Riemann-Liouville fractional derivatives. Such equations arise as the Euler-Lagrange equation in variational principles with fractional derivatives. We reduce the problem to a Fredholm integral equation and construct a solution in the space of continuous functions. Two competing approaches in formulating differential equations of fractional order...
We study a variational problem which was introduced by Hannon, Marcus and Mizel [ESAIM: COCV9 (2003) 145–149] to describe step-terraces on surfaces of so-called “unorthodox” crystals. We show that there is no nondegenerate intervals on which the absolute value of a minimizer is identically.
In this Note, by using a generalization of the classical Fermat principle, we prove the existence and multiplicity of lightlike geodesics joining a point with a timelike curve on a class of Lorentzian manifolds, satisfying a suitable compactness assumption, which is weaker than the globally hyperbolicity.
The present part of the paper completes the discussion in Part I in two directions. Firstly, in Section 5 a number of existence theorems for a solution to Problem III (principle of minimum potential energy) is established. Secondly, Section 6 and 7 are devoted to a discussion of both the classical and the abstract approach to the duality theory as well as the relationship between the solvability of Problem III and its dual one.
