A construction of noncontractible simply connected cell-like two-dimensional Peano continua

Katsuya Eda, Umed H. Karimov, Dušan Repovš (2007)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Using the topologist sine curve we present a new functorial construction of cone-like spaces, starting in the category of all path-connected topological spaces with a base point and continuous maps, and ending in the subcategory of all simply connected spaces. If one starts from a noncontractible n-dimensional Peano continuum for any n > 0, then our construction yields a simply connected noncontractible (n + 1)-dimensional cell-like Peano continuum. In particular, starting from the circle 𝕊¹,...

A rigid space admitting compact operators

Paul Sisson (1995)

Studia Mathematica

A rigid space is a topological vector space whose endomorphisms are all simply scalar multiples of the identity map. The first complete rigid space was published in 1981 in [2]. Clearly a rigid space is a trivial-dual space, and admits no compact endomorphisms. In this paper a modification of the original construction results in a rigid space which is, however, the domain space of a compact operator, answering a question that was first raised soon after the existence of complete rigid spaces was...

Connected economically metrizable spaces

Taras Banakh, Myroslava Vovk, Michał Ryszard Wójcik (2011)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

A topological space is non-separably connected if it is connected but all of its connected separable subspaces are singletons. We show that each connected sequential topological space X is the image of a non-separably connected complete metric space X under a monotone quotient map. The metric d X of the space X is economical in the sense that for each infinite subspace A ⊂ X the cardinality of the set d X ( a , b ) : a , b A does not exceed the density of A, | d X ( A × A ) | d e n s ( A ) . The construction of the space X determines a functor : Top...

Countable Toronto spaces

Gary Gruenhage, J. Moore (2000)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

A space X is called an α-Toronto space if X is scattered of Cantor-Bendixson rank α and is homeomorphic to each of its subspaces of the same rank. We answer a question of Steprāns by constructing a countable α-Toronto space for each α ≤ ω. We also construct consistent examples of countable α-Toronto spaces for each α < ω 1 .
