The Ore conjecture

Martin Liebeck, E.A. O’Brien, Aner Shalev, Pham Tiep (2010)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

The Ore conjecture, posed in 1951, states that every element of every finite non-abelian simple group is a commutator. Despite considerable effort, it remains open for various infinite families of simple groups. In this paper we develop new strategies, combining character-theoretic methods with other ingredients, and use them to establish the conjecture.

The periodicity conjecture for blocks of group algebras

Karin Erdmann, Andrzej Skowroński (2015)

Colloquium Mathematicae

We describe the representation-infinite blocks B of the group algebras KG of finite groups G over algebraically closed fields K for which all simple modules are periodic with respect to the action of the syzygy operators. In particular, we prove that all such blocks B are periodic algebras of period 4. This confirms the periodicity conjecture for blocks of group algebras.

The ring of multisymmetric functions

Francesco Vaccarino (2005)

Annales de l’institut Fourier

We give a presentation (in terms of generators and relations) of the ring of multisymmetric functions that holds for any commutative ring R , thereby answering a classical question coming from works of F. Junker [J1, J2, J3] in the late nineteen century and then implicitly in H. Weyl book “The classical groups” [W].

The Roquette category of finite p -groups

Serge Bouc (2015)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

Let p be a prime number. This paper introduces the Roquette category p of finite p -groups, which is an additive tensor category containing all finite p -groups among its objects. In p , every finite p -group P admits a canonical direct summand P , called the edge of P . Moreover P splits uniquely as a direct sum of edges of Roquette p -groups, and the tensor structure of p can be described in terms of such edges. The main motivation for considering this category is that the additive functors from p to...
