We prove that an -additive cover of a Čech complete, or more generally scattered-K-analytic space, has a σ-scattered refinement. This generalizes results of G. Koumoullis and R. W. Hansell.
It is proved that -mappings preserve absolute Borel classes, which improves results of R. W. Hansell, J. E. Jayne and C. A. Rogers. The proof is based on the fact that any -mapping f: X → Y of an absolute Suslin metric space X onto an absolute Suslin metric space Y becomes a piecewise perfect mapping when restricted to a suitable -set satisfying .
We present a general necessary and sufficient algebraic condition for the spectral dilation of a finitely additive L(X,Y)-valued measure of finite semivariation when X and Y are Banach spaces. Using our condition we derive the main results of Rosenberg, Makagon and Salehi, and Miamee without the assumption that X and/or Y are Hilbert spaces. In addition we relate the dilation problem to the problem of factoring a family of operators through a single Hilbert space.
Diagonal metric subgroups of the metric centralizer of group extensions are investigated. Any diagonal compact subgroup Z of is determined by a compact subgroup Y of a given metric compact abelian group X, by a family , of group automorphisms and by a measurable function f:X → G (G a metric compact abelian group). The group Z consists of the triples , y ∈ Y, where , x ∈ X.
We prove that every topological dynamical system (X,T) has a faithful zero-dimensional principal extension, i.e. a zero-dimensional extension (Y,S) such that for every S-invariant measure ν on Y the conditional entropy h(ν | X) is zero, and, in addition, every invariant measure on X has exactly one preimage on Y. This is a strengthening of the authors' result in Acta Appl. Math. [to appear] (where the extension was principal, but not necessarily faithful).

We consider two situations which relate properties of filters with properties of the limit operators with respect to these filters. In the first one, we show that the space of sequences having limits with respect to a filter is itself and therefore, by a result of Dobrowolski and Marciszewski, such spaces are topologically indistinguishable. This answers a question of Dobrowolski and Marciszewski. In the second one, we characterize universally measurable filters which fulfill Fatou’s lemma.
It is not known if every finitary factor of a Bernoulli scheme is finitarily isomorphic to a Bernoulli scheme (is finitarily Bernoulli). In this paper, for any Bernoulli scheme X, we define a metric on the finitary factor maps from X. We show that for any finitary map f: X → Y, there exists a sequence of finitary maps fₙ: X → Y(n) that converges to f, where each Y(n) is finitarily Bernoulli. We prove a strengthened version of Dye's theorem on orbit equivalence, showing that if the transformation structures are represented as finite coordinate change equivalence relations of ergodic measured Bratteli diagrams, then there is a finitary orbit equivalence between these diagrams.
