Unique solvability of a linear problem with perturbed periodic boundary values

Bahman Mehri, Mohammad H. Nojumi (1999)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

We investigate the problem with perturbed periodic boundary values y ' ' ' ( x ) + a 2 ( x ) y ' ' ( x ) + a 1 ( x ) y ' ( x ) + a 0 ( x ) y ( x ) = f ( x ) , y ( i ) ( T ) = c y ( i ) ( 0 ) , i = 0 , 1 , 2 ; 0 < c < 1 with a 2 , a 1 , a 0 C [ 0 , T ] for some arbitrary positive real number T , by transforming the problem into an integral equation with the aid of a piecewise polynomial and utilizing the Fredholm alternative theorem to obtain a condition on the uniform norms of the coefficients a 2 , a 1 and a 0 which guarantees unique solvability of the problem. Besides having theoretical value, this problem has also important applications since decay is a phenomenon that all...

Uniqueness and weak stability for multi-dimensional transport equations with one-sided Lipschitz coefficient

Francois Bouchut, Francois James, Simona Mancini (2005)

Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa - Classe di Scienze

The Cauchy problem for a multidimensional linear transport equation with discontinuous coefficient is investigated. Provided the coefficient satisfies a one-sided Lipschitz condition, existence, uniqueness and weak stability of solutions are obtained for either the conservative backward problem or the advective forward problem by duality. Specific uniqueness criteria are introduced for the backward conservation equation since weak solutions are not unique. A main point is the introduction of a generalized...

Uniqueness of limit cycles bounded by two invariant parabolas

Eduardo Sáez, Iván Szántó (2012)

Applications of Mathematics

In this paper we consider a class of cubic polynomial systems with two invariant parabolas and prove in the parameter space the existence of neighborhoods such that in one the system has a unique limit cycle and in the other the system has at most three limit cycles, bounded by the invariant parabolas.

Uniqueness of Monotone Mono-stable Waves for Reaction-Diffusion Equations with Time Delay

W. Huang, M. Han, M. Puckett (2009)

Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena

Many models in biology and ecology can be described by reaction-diffusion equations wit time delay. One of important solutions for these type of equations is the traveling wave solution that shows the phenomenon of wave propagation. The existence of traveling wave fronts has been proved for large class of equations, in particular, the monotone systems, such as the cooperative systems and some competition systems. However, the problem on the uniqueness of traveling wave (for a fixed wave speed)...
