The notion of “strong boundary values” was introduced by the authors in the local theory of hyperfunction boundary values (boundary values of functions with unrestricted growth, not necessarily solutions of a PDE). In this paper two points are clarified, at least in the global setting (compact boundaries): independence with respect to the defining function that defines the boundary, and the spaces of test functions to be used. The proofs rely crucially on simple results in spectral asymptotics.
Given a compact manifold , an integer and an exponent , we prove that the class of smooth maps on the cube with values into is dense with respect to the strong topology in the Sobolev space when the homotopy group of order is trivial. We also prove density of maps that are smooth except for a set of dimension , without any restriction on the homotopy group of .
We investigate the problem when the strong dual of a projective limit of (LB)-spaces coincides with the inductive limit of the strong duals. It is well-known that the answer is affirmative for spectra of Banach spaces if the projective limit is a quasinormable Fréchet space. In that case, the spectrum satisfies a certain condition which is called “strong P-type”. We provide an example which shows that strong P-type in general does not imply that the strong dual of the projective limit is the inductive...
We show that the set of those Markov semigroups on the Schatten class ₁ such that in the strong operator topology , where Q is a one-dimensional projection, form a meager subset of all Markov semigroups.
In any dual space X*, the set QP of quasi-polyhedral points is contained in the set SSD of points of strong subdifferentiability of the norm which is itself contained in the set NA of norm attaining functionals. We show that NA and SSD coincide if and only if every proximinal hyperplane of X is strongly proximinal, and that if QP and NA coincide then every finite codimensional proximinal subspace of X is strongly proximinal. Natural examples and applications are provided.
A reflexive topological group is called strongly reflexive if each closed subgroup and each Hausdorff quotient of the group and of its dual group is reflexive. In this paper we establish an adequate concept of strong reflexivity for convergence groups. We prove that complete metrizable nuclear groups and products of countably many locally compact topological groups are BB-strongly reflexive.
The strong subdifferentiability of norms (i.eȯne-sided differentiability uniform in directions) is studied in connection with some structural properties of Banach spaces. It is shown that every separable Banach space with nonseparable dual admits a norm that is nowhere strongly subdifferentiable except at the origin. On the other hand, every Banach space with a strongly subdifferentiable norm is Asplund.
Let be a real Banach space and let be an ideal of over a -finite measure space . Let be the space of all strongly -measurable functions such that the scalar function , defined by for , belongs to . The paper deals with strong topologies on . In particular, the strong topology ( the order continuous dual of ) is examined. We generalize earlier results of [PC] and [FPS] concerning the strong topologies.
