Some theorems characterizing the metric and covering dimension of arbitrary subspaces in a Euclidean space will be obtained in terms of ε -translations; some of them were proved in our previous paper [G1] under the additional assumption of the boundedness of subspaces.

Dimension vs. genus: A surface realization of the little k-cubes and an E operad

We define a new E operad based on surfaces with foliations which contains E k suboperads. We construct CW models for these operads and provide applications of these models by giving actions on Hochschild complexes (thus making contact with string topology), by giving explicit cell representatives for the Dyer-Lashof-Cohen operations for the 2-cubes and by constructing new Ω spectra. In this paper we study the degeneration of both the cohomology and the cohomotopy Frölicher spectral sequences in a special class of complex manifolds, namely the class of compact nilmanifolds endowed with a nilpotent complex structure. Whereas the cohomotopy spectral sequence is always degenerate for such a manifold, there exist many nilpotent complex structures on compact nilmanifolds for which the classical Frölicher spectral sequence does not collapse even at the second term.
