A Bayesian model for binary Markov chains.
With the aid of Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods we can sample even from complex multi-dimensional distributions which cannot be exactly calculated. Thus, an application to the problem of knowledge integration (e. g. in expert systems) is straightforward.
This article describes an accurate procedure for computing the mean first passage times of a finite irreducible Markov chain and a Markov renewal process. The method is a refinement to the Kohlas, Zeit fur Oper Res, 30, 197–207, (1986) procedure. The technique is numerically stable in that it doesn’t involve subtractions. Algebraic expressions for the special cases of one, two, three and four states are derived.Aconsequence of the procedure is that the stationary distribution of the embedded Markov...
The paper surveys some recent results on iterative aggregation/disaggregation methods (IAD) for computing stationary probability vectors of stochastic matrices and solutions of Leontev linear systems. A particular attention is paid to fast IAD methods.
The paper concerns the possibilities for mathematical modelling of safety related systems (equipment oriented on safety). Some mathematical models have been required by the present European Standards for the railway transport. We are interested in the possibility of using Markov’s models to meet these Standards. In the text an example of using that method in the interlocking equipment life cycle is given. An efficient aggregation/disaggregation method for computing some characteristics of Markov...
A nonstandard approach to change point estimation is presented in this paper. Three models with random coefficients and Bayesian approach are used for modelling the year average temperatures measured in Prague Klementinum. The posterior distribution of the change point and other parameters are estimated from the random samples generated by the combination of the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm and the Gibbs sampler.
An extension of the Rasch model with correlated latent variables is proposed to model correlated binary data within families. The latent variables have the classical correlation structure of Fisher (1918) and the model parameters thus have genetic interpretations. The proposed model is fitted to data using a hybrid of the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm and the MCEM modification of the EM-algorithm and is illustrated using genotype-phenotype data on a psychological subtest in families where some members...
The BIPF algorithm is a Markovian algorithm with the purpose of simulating certain probability distributions supported by contingency tables belonging to hierarchical log-linear models. The updating steps of the algorithm depend only on the required expected marginal tables over the maximal terms of the hierarchical model. Usually these tables are marginals of a positive joint table, in which case it is well known that the algorithm is a blocking Gibbs Sampler. But the algorithm makes sense even...
The paper concerns estimation of the rose of directions of a stationary fibre process in from the intersection counts of the process with test planes. A new approach is suggested based on Bayesian statistical techniques. The method is derived from the special case of a Poisson line process however the estimator is shown to be consistent generally. Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms are used for the approximation of the posterior distribution. Uniform ergodicity of the algorithms used is...
The stochastic approximation version of EM (SAEM) proposed by Delyon et al. (1999) is a powerful alternative to EM when the E-step is intractable. Convergence of SAEM toward a maximum of the observed likelihood is established when the unobserved data are simulated at each iteration under the conditional distribution. We show that this very restrictive assumption can be weakened. Indeed, the results of Benveniste et al. for stochastic approximation with markovian perturbations are used to establish...

We introduce a new way of the analysis of iterative aggregation-disaggregation methods for computing stationary probability distribution vectors of stochastic matrices. This new approach is based on the Fourier transform of the error propagation matrix. Exact formula for its spectrum can be obtained if the stochastic matrix is circulant. Some examples are presented.
The article considers the effectiveness of various methods used to solve systems of linear equations (which emerge while modeling computer networks and systems with Markov chains) and the practical influence of the methods applied on accuracy. The paper considers some hybrids of both direct and iterative methods. Two varieties of the Gauss elimination will be considered as an example of direct methods: the LU factorization method and the WZ factorization method. The Gauss-Seidel iterative method...
We study asymptotic behavior of Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) procedures. Sometimes the performances of MCMC procedures are poor and there are great importance for the study of such behavior. In this paper we call degeneracy for a particular type of poor performances. We show some equivalent conditions for degeneracy. As an application, we consider the cumulative probit model. It is well known that the natural data augmentation (DA) procedure does not work well for this model and the so-called...
Variance reduction has always been a central issue in Monte Carlo experiments. Population Monte Carlo can be used to this effect, in that a mixture of importance functions, called a D-kernel, can be iteratively optimized to achieve the minimum asymptotic variance for a function of interest among all possible mixtures. The implementation of this iterative scheme is illustrated for the computation of the price of a European option in the Cox-Ingersoll-Ross model. A Central Limit theorem as well...
