A numerical method for unsteady flows

Nicola Botta, Rolf Jeltsch (1995)

Applications of Mathematics

A high resolution finite volume method for the computation of unsteady solutions of the Euler equations in two space dimensions is presented and validated. The scheme is of Godunov-type. The first order part of the flux function uses the approximate Riemann problem solver of Pandolfi and here a new derivation of this solver is presented. This construction paves the way to understand the conditions under which the scheme satisfies an entropy condition. The extension to higher order is done by applying...

An approximate nonlinear projection scheme for a combustion model

Christophe Berthon, Didier Reignier (2003)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

The paper deals with the numerical resolution of the convection-diffusion system which arises when modeling combustion for turbulent flow. The considered model is of compressible turbulent reacting type where the turbulence-chemistry interactions are governed by additional balance equations. The system of PDE’s, that governs such a model, turns out to be in non-conservation form and usual numerical approaches grossly fail in the capture of viscous shock layers. Put in other words, classical finite...

Einstein-Euler equations for matter spacetimes with Gowdy symmetry

Philippe G. LeFloch (2008/2009)

Séminaire Équations aux dérivées partielles

We investigate the initial value problem for the Einstein-Euler equations of general relativity under the assumption of Gowdy symmetry on T 3 . Given an arbitrary initial data set, we establish the existence of a globally hyperbolic future development and we provide a global foliation of this spacetime in terms of a geometrically defined time-function coinciding with the area of the orbits of the symmetry group. This allows us to construct matter spacetimes with weak regularity which admit, both, impulsive...

Free boundary problems and transonic shocks for the Euler equations in unbounded domains

Gui-Qiang Chen, Mikhail Feldman (2004)

Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa - Classe di Scienze

We establish the existence and stability of multidimensional transonic shocks (hyperbolic-elliptic shocks), which are not nearly orthogonal to the flow direction, for the Euler equations for steady compressible potential fluids in unbounded domains in n , n 3 . The Euler equations can be written as a second order nonlinear equation of mixed hyperbolic-elliptic type for the velocity potential. The transonic shock problem can be formulated into the following free boundary problem: The free boundary is the...
