Enrichment Paradox Induced by Spatial Heterogeneity in a Phytoplankton - Zooplankton System

J.-C. Poggiale, M. Gauduchon, P. Auger (2008)

Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena

This paper is devoted to the study of a predator-prey model in a patchy environment. The model represents the interactions between phytoplankton and zooplankton in the water column. Two patches are considered with respect to light availability: one patch is associated to the surface layer, the second patch describes the bottom layer. We show that this spatial heterogeneity may destabilize the predator-prey system, even in oligotrophic system where the nutrient is low enough to avoid ”paradox-enrichment”...

Equazione stocastica di dinamica di popolazioni di tipo preda-predatore

Sonia Chessa, Hisao Fujita Yashima (2002)

Bollettino dell'Unione Matematica Italiana

Equilibrium transitions in finite populations of players

J. Miękisz (2006)

Banach Center Publications

We discuss stochastic dynamics of finite populations of individuals playing symmetric games. We review recent results concerning the dependence of the long-run behavior of such systems on the number of players and the noise level. In the case of two-player games with two symmetric Nash equilibria, when the number of players increases, the population undergoes multiple transitions between its equilibria.

Evolution in a changing environment: existence of solutions

P. Rybka, Q. Tang, D. Waxman (2003)

Colloquium Mathematicae

We establish the existence of solutions of an intrinsically nonlinear differential-integral equation that arises from the mathematical modelling of the evolution of an asexual population in a changing environment. The main objective is to pave the way for a rigorous analysis of the linear stability of travelling wave solutions of the corresponding problem.

Evolution in a migrating population model

Włodzimierz Bąk, Tadeusz Nadzieja (2012)

Applicationes Mathematicae

We consider a model of migrating population occupying a compact domain Ω in the plane. We assume the Malthusian growth of the population at each point x ∈ Ω and that the mobility of individuals depends on x ∈ Ω. The evolution of the probability density u(x,t) that a randomly chosen individual occupies x ∈ Ω at time t is described by the nonlocal linear equation u t = Ω φ ( y ) u ( y , t ) d y - φ ( x ) u ( x , t ) , where φ(x) is a given function characterizing the mobility of individuals living at x. We show that the asymptotic behaviour of u(x,t)...

Existence and global attractivity of periodic solutions in a higher order difference equation

Chuanxi Qian, Justin Smith (2018)

Archivum Mathematicum

Consider the following higher order difference equation x ( n + 1 ) = f ( n , x ( n ) ) + g ( n , x ( n - k ) ) , n = 0 , 1 , where f ( n , x ) and g ( n , x ) : { 0 , 1 , } × [ 0 , ) [ 0 , ) are continuous functions in x and periodic functions in n with period p , and k is a nonnegative integer. We show the existence of a periodic solution { x ˜ ( n ) } under certain conditions, and then establish a sufficient condition for { x ˜ ( n ) } to be a global attractor of all nonnegative solutions of the equation. Applications to Riccati difference equation and some other difference equations derived from mathematical biology are also given.

Existence and global attractivity of positive almost periodic solutions for a kind of fishing model with pure-delay

Tianwei Zhang, Yongzhi Liao (2017)

Kybernetika

By using some analytical techniques, modified inequalities and Mawhin's continuation theorem of coincidence degree theory, some sufficient conditions for the existence of at least one positive almost periodic solution of a kind of fishing model with delay are obtained. Further, the global attractivity of the positive almost periodic solution of this model is also considered. Finally, three examples are given to illustrate the main results of this paper.
